I have been a pharmacy tech for 4 years, but I have only worked in retail.
I am thinking about moving on and exploring other options.  I have been
told that the hospital setting compared to retail is like apples and
oranges.  Exactly how different is it?  I am trying to decide if this would
be right for me.

Thank you!

Just like retail, your job experience varies depending on where you
work.  I worked in hospital when I first graduated then switched over
to retail and have stayed there since.  I like the fact that you have
patient contact in retail, where as in hospital you usually stay in
your area of the pharmacy (tucked away in the bowls of the hospital)
and only come in contact with your fellow workers and nurses.  In a
sweeping generalization I say that hospital pharmacy you see the same
problems every day and retail you see different problems every day.
This may be different of course if you are a clinical pharmacist
rounding with doctors and recommending treatment options, but alot of
hospital pharmacy is filling and checking carts, making and checking
IV's and entering orders into the computer. (just like retail pharmacy
is entering orders into the computer and counting, pouring, licking and
sticking) but like I say the difference (IMHO) is the patient contact.
(Depending on the patients, this may not be a good thing..; ).

Before I was a pharmacist, I worked in a place that had hundreds of
employees. When I went to work for Walgreens, a typical store had maybe
20 employees. I prefer working in a place with a lot of people, and
therefore I enjoy the hospital environment.

On the other hand, I work with a RPh who came from KMart. He had a
difficult time adjusting to being an employee, after being a pharmacy
manager at KM for years and years. Techs may experience the reverse. In
a hospital setting I think techs are often allowed much greater
responsibility and greater autonomy.  Around here, they earn more too.
