I would like to concoct a tablet coating that my digestive system
couldn't breach for about four hours. I would like to apply this
coating to an ambien tablet, swallow it and observe the efects.
I fall asleep easily, but wake early, unrested. The cycle repeats.
I fall asleep every night with the ease of someone who was
shortchanged of sleep the night before and is ready to catch up.
I have experimented with ambien, but found its effects to last for
4 hours. I wake after 5 or 6 hours so ambien does not address my
complaint. I consider 7 1/2 hours to be adequate sleep.
Has anyone experimented with home-brew tablet coatings?

This isn't what you asked, but anyway: why not use e.g. diazepam,
nitrazepam, or some other longer-acting agent instead?

I don't believe any medical expert would advise regular people that have
no medical training to experiment on themselves or anyone else with
coating pills with various substances. I suggest that you should ask your
doctor to prescribe a medication that will solve your problem.

Zopiclone (Imovane) would be more suited. It will prolong your sleep
duration though there is more chance of a Hangover in the morning.
Another alternative is Remeron (Zispin) typically prescribed as a anti
depressant which has significant sedative profile. Take on before bed and
you are out for the count for at least 8 hours.

I've heard that Aventis has a timed release formulation of Ambien due
out soon.

I see that Imovane has a half-life of 5 hours versus 2 hours for ambien.
I wonder if the heavy marketing of ambien as a sleep-for-8-hours remedy in
place of a possibly more efficacious drug has to due with its profitbility,
(unexpired patent?) or whether better drugs have more serious side effects.
I shall endeavor to get a sample of this.

I see that this one has a half life of 30 hours.
