Listerine Drinker Arrested for DUI
Posted January 17, 2005
ADRIAN, Mich. -- A woman who admitted drinking three
glasses of Listerine mouthwash had a blood-alcohol
content more than three times the legal limit when she
was arrested for drunken driving, police said Friday.
The woman, identified by police Sgt. Mike Shadbolt as
50-year-old Carol A. Ries, was arrested Sunday night
and released on personal bond the next day. She was to
be arraigned late next week on a misdemeanor charge of
operating under the influence of liquor, Shadbolt said.
Police also found an open bottle of Listerine in Ries'
car, and asked Lenawee County prosecutors Friday to
authorize a warrant charging her with having an open
intoxicant in a motor vehicle, Shadbolt said. Calls to
the prosecutor's office were not answered after
business hours.
Ries showed signs of intoxication after her car
rear-ended another vehicle Sunday, Shadbolt said. She
told police she had not consumed any alcohol and also
passed a Breathalyzer test, but "there was something
not quite right about her," Shadbolt said.
She failed a second test using different equipment and,
under further questioning, admitted to drinking three
glasses of Listerine earlier in the day, Shadbolt said.
According to Listerine manufacturer Pfizer Inc.'s Web
site, original formula Listerine contains 26.9 percent
alcohol, more than four times that of many malt
liquors. Other varieties contain 21.6 percent alcohol.

What's the point of shill stories like this? The answer is another
question: Why does alcohol-based mouthwash cost $5 a bottle?
And people wonder why America is going to hell in a handbasket.

Because its distribution is not regulated and taxed up the wazoo by the
Government the way liquor and beer is.

My point was quite the opposite, Larry. Alcohol-based mouthwash
used to cost 1/4 what it does now, until some security soccer moms
figured out alcoholics were drinking it. The "solution"? Increase
prices 400% and make it cost about the same as hard liquor.

Interesting. Has the price really increased because of potential
abuse? You'd have to be a raging alcoholic to stomach listerine. I
would think even hardcore drunks will splurge $5 for night train
regardless of the cost of cheap mouthwash.

Absolutely. The grades of alcohol used in mouthwashes costs
a dime a gallon.

No, a certain percentage will drink whatever costs the least.
Some drunks eat Sterno for chrissakes.

250 ML Listerine WinterFresh or Artic Mint
50 ML Cranberry Juice
50 ML Grapefruit Juice
10 ML Crene de Menthe
10 ML "Rooster" Brand extract
20 ML "Howlin Jerry's" highball flavouring
Mix in blender with ice, serve with lime wedge.
My dentist recommends it about 10 minutes before he starts to drillin'
but warns to take a taxi home. The novicane makes it pretty tolerable.

Cite your source for the price increase theory... hell, site your
source that the price has gone up beyond regular inflation...
At CVS, Listerine costs $6 for 1000ML. If this was alcohol, here in
Michigan it would cost:
13.85% liquor tax = $.83
$13.50 / proof gallon federal tax= (approx Listerine is 21.6% alcohol,
~43 proof) $1.70
6% sales tax = $.36
Total = $8.89
So you'd basically pay 33% tax on this product.

What hard liquor is priced the same as listerine?? I buy Kroger brand
for something like $3.49 for what, gotta be about 24 oz.
Buy the same amount of Absolut and it run $40.

You're assuming that people who see your message have followed the
thread all along.
Top posting just makes people read everything in reverse order.

Purchase a food grade plastic bucket with airtight lid,
a large glass carboy and wine making vent and stopper, add
something with lots of sugar like grape juice or even sugar water
plus a yeast perhaps a wine yeast and you'll soon have cheap
ethanol. Freeze the results somewhat and then straining it will
result in a higher proof. so I am told. And also purchase some
jugs.

The real question is this.. why the heck would she be drinking
Listerine.. what's her defense in doing so.. other than to seek the
alcohol affects??? Forget the cost.. she's outright guilty. Alcohol..
in any form.. too much is illegal.. and she should not be drinking and
driving for the simple fact that it impairs her coordinated abilities!
