PVC skipped heart beats due to hydrocodone abuse

Hello,  Im having a problem with skipped heart beats.  Let me briefly
give you how this came into play.  Im 28 male who had been abusing
hydrocodone for about 2 years (no i was not taking this for any medical
reason).  I was taking up to 100mg of hydro daily.  I have been through
withdrawls before on a 50 mg habit and never had a problem like this.
After a good year long binge of 100mg <> a day, I decided to stop again
only because i started to feal weird chest pains in all different
areas.  My neck has siezed up twice not even sure if that is related.
Arms fell asleep but i do sleep kind of weird again not sure if that is
related.

But as i tried to take more hydro it would hurt.  Now at this point on
im 30mg a day.  I was 230 lbs and now weight about 204.  I was waking
up in the middle of the night in what seemed a comma.  I was up but i
could not wake my body up.  I had to shake myself until I got up.  On
other occasions i would wake up in a panic, take my blood pressure
which would go up to 160.  This would happen every other day, then
almost ever day, until that one day would it would not stop ALL day.  I
saw my doctor and told him all this and subscribed me CATAPRES and a
"good luck" and scheduled me for a physical a week later.  The next day
things got alot worse and heart rate and blood pressure was more
constant. I actually could not take it anymore and went to the
emergency room.  I came in with a blood pressure of 165 and a heart
rate of 170bpm.  All the doctor did was take an EKG and requested more
CATAPRES since i was only on just a patch of .1mg.  Im now on 2 pills a
day plus the patch.  They then sent me home with the cause as narcotic
withdrawl which i dont entirely believe to be the reason.  Anyway, that
same night my nerves or heart did not seem to stop and was in fear that
my heart could not keep up at this pace any longer, i took a half of
xanex(thank god i had available) and slept like a baby.  Panic almost
all gone, temporarily anyway.

The only bad news is now as after i went to the doctor again for
another EKG he says i do still have irregular heart beats.  Next week
when a holter monitor is available he will put me on one as well as a
chest xray.  I know for a fact by fealing my own pulse that every
couple minutes or so my heart DOES skip a beat and comes back with a
large pulse.  I do feel this in my stomach as if it is nerves or just
scared that it happened.

The good news is Im on about a 10mg habit every other day or so and
basically done but still have that skip heart beat fealing.  Also i
woke up twice last night one time my heart seemed to be racing again in
my dream.  So, my question is can anyone offer any advice?  Should i
continue valium or xanex at low doses?  Should i excercise or do i need
rest from my heart going crazy for days. I have been to the doctor and
the hospital and not getting much advise or help.

Hi,

I know exactly what you are talking about.  I had the same thing years
ago .. and wore a halter monitor for it.  I also did extensive research
on this over the years.  And I have good news for you.

Relax.  Skipped heartbeats are often normal for people.  Many
experience them all the time and aren't even aware of it.  There are
basically two types of arhythmia.. one is bad .. the other is not a
problem.  It sounds like you have the kind that is benign.  Whenever my
blood sugar is wacked out .. or my salt intake is high .. or my blood
pressure changes .. either up .. or down .... I get irregular
heartbeats ... skipped heartbeats... and I have had this for about 15
yrs.  Many many people have this.  If you had the irregular heartbeat
that is the dangerous kind (the kind that comes from the lower part of
your heart) they will be able to detect this with the halter monitor...
but I doubt this is the case.  Everything you said sounds exactly like
me .. when I first started having this.  I was major panicked.  Opiate
WD can indeed precipitate this because of the major fluctuations in
blood pressure.  Also, the waking up with these feelings of panic go
hand in hand with the anxiety of being scared that something is wrong
... and also this is part of opiate WD.

I'll bet this isn't the first thing that you've gotten all worried
about when it comes to health issues.  I have always been a bit of a
hypochondriac <spelling> and the panic comes naturally for me as well.
My guess is that you may keep having these skipped heatbeats as long as
you are going through a taper which brings on WD.

One other thing.  Whenever I would have diarhea ... I would get these
skipped heartbeats .. and they would come like every couple minutes.
It never failed .... must have been triggered by some electrolyte
imbalance.  You can try drinking gatorade .. this sometimes helped me
during those times.  Man, over the years though ... I'll bet I talked
to 30 people who had these skipped heartbeats.

Get on a good diet .... cuz if you are not eating right .. this can
definitely trigger them if you are prone to them.  I was told that
these skipped beats do not really harm you (believe it or not) but
because they scare me .. so I always want to do what I can to get rid
of them.  Eat a balanced diet ... fruit and vegatables ... and
something with healthy oils (olive, flax, sunflower) .. and make sure
you are getting at least 300 calories a day from those oils.  Also, up
your protien (try getting some whey powder from a store like GNC).
I'll bet you $100 that if you drink a whey protien drink (limit the
carbohydrates ... get ones that are low in carbs) and stir fry some
veggies with healthy oils .. and eat some fruit that within a day you
won't have many, of any, more skipped heartbeats.  Remember though ...
make sure you are eating at least 1500=2500 calories .. cuz I would
always get these skipped beats when I would cut calories as well.  If
all this is too much for you right now ... try drinking lots of whole
milk (it's pretty balanced and always works for me in a pinch).
Good luck ... and rest easy .. you are fine.

you cant feel arythmias
Repeating Rifle - 09 Jan 2005 02:14 GMT
> you cant feel arythmias

I can.
Baruch - 09 Jan 2005 02:36 GMT
> you cant feel arythmias

Yes, you can.  It depends on the arrhythmia.  For premature ventricular
contractions (PVC's), there is a sensation of the heart "skipping a
beat".  It's actually a sort of double beat, with a longer space between
the next one, but it is quite noticeable.  Some other arrhythmias can
also be felt.  Bradycardia (slow heartbeat) and tachycardia (fast) can
be felt, of course, and they are often arrhythmias.
Nuke - 09 Jan 2005 03:16 GMT
its very possible, im no expert but you sound as if you know what your
talking about.  Allthough I was diagnosed with arrythmias because of
hypokalemia and I have never experienced being able to fell it happen.

I had PVC's for a while - no clue where they came from, and they went
away without treatment.  I could feel those quite easily.  But other
arrhythmias are often completely "silent".
Nuke - 09 Jan 2005 01:13 GMT
Sounds like a tremor to me fanfare.  You Cant feel arrythmias for the
most part.
MobiusDick - 21 Jan 2005 17:18 GMT
Are you talking about atrial fibrillation or arrythmia? You should
likely be on a Calcium Channel Blocker like varapmil or a beta blocker
like propranolol.

Do Valium or Xanax help. It sounds a lot like a panic attack and the
drug of choice for that is Xanax.

Although many people live a normal life with an arrythmia it does
increase your risk of sudden death from cardiac arrest. It is nothing
to sneeze at, and I would see a cardiologist if you have only been to a
GP or an internist.

the hydro you were taking...how much acetominophen did the doses
contain?...did you use any form of extraction method?

Apologies for top posting, I am still looking for an outlook
express fix to enable me to bottom post easier.

As to your question, most people indeed do feel "skipped"
beats and this is often referred to as a "palpitation".  It is not
necessarily a PVC (premature ventricular contraction) but could
be a PAC (premature atrial contraction) as well.

Many people feel these or are more sensitive to feeling these
when going through anxiety reactions which certainly are common
long after the initial withdrawl phase of opiate addiction.  It could
be a problem or it may be a transitory thing that will take care of
itself.  The fact that you were put on clonidine is a good thing, it is
a good drug for your problems.  It seems that having an EKG and
wearing a halter monitor is a good clinical approach to proper
diagnosis by your doctor.  I would also agree as others have
posted that the acetaminophen that is in the hydrocodone you
were taking could be a problem and could have caused some
liver damage unless you somehow removed the apap through
some extraction method, generally the maximum apap that one
is recomended to have is 4000 mg. / day.  This assumes that you
are not drinking or taking any other medication that would also
be liver toxic, I would assume that your doctor did some blood
work to check your liver enzymes which would indicate liver
damage.

I really did not think it was common for someone to become
addicted to hydrocodone but have seen many posts recently
that indicate I was very wrong about this.  I have had vicodin
before myself and felt no "high" from it and thought since it was
a schedule III that it had a low abuse potential, especially when
compared to things like dilaudid or percocet.  I guess I have been
mistaken but my concern would be that you take care of yourself
and find a 12 step program such as narcotics anonymous to deal
with your addiction in addition to the diagnostic regimen that your
doctor has outlined.  It seems like you are in good hands but I
would have a strong fear for you if you did not seek out help
from a 12 step program.

Addiction is a disease not unlike diabetes or tuberculosis, I hope
that you are treated for it and that you are not stigmatized because
of it.  I wish you luck and hope you seek out proper treatment for
not only the palpitations and anxiety but also the addiction.

Good luck,

PHM

Hey Brian Fanfare. I like your reply to Mikey. Except that I'd
substitute the whey powder with soy protien powder, and the milk with
soy milk. 'Cause I'm vegan. But I'm willing to bet, from the version
you gave of a healthy diet, that you're ovo-lavto or at least lacto
vegetarian. That would be sooo cool, to find another veggie here in
ADH.

As for Mikey's problem, it used to happen to me all the time when I was
on percocets and oxy of other formulations. I think it was because of
the roller-coaster ride of short acting meds. I measured my BP and
pulse every week at the pharmacy, and I had numbers off te charts,
especially when I was there to pick up pills because I had run out. WD
used to give me all sorts of heart symptoms. Then I switched to morph,
and my BP and heartrate returned to the ideals of health, and all of
this without me getting any non-sexual exercise at all. Weird. I hope
my new dillies don't f.ck with that, I don't want that nasy oxy style
withdrawal again. The morphine withdrawal was a cakewalk compared to
the oxy withdrawal.

I hope you're allright Mikey. I've noticed your posts, and I'd like to
hear that you're allright.''

Nothing, nada, nil, nertz and negative, is  what.  In the context the OP is
using it in, PVC stands for "premature ventricular contractions".

0)You can't have heart problem becasue of w/d
That is the only think is sure ( and that you do not need
catapresan).

it's
1) you have an heart problem, but not related to opiates
2) you have something like anxiety/panic attack.
3) you have something else

I suppose it's 2)

Take more drugs!
That's what I'd do.

Welp here is the conclusion.  sorry for the brief details here but this
is all i know. I have had a Halter Monitor test.  I had about 88
attacks an hour at some points it wouldnt be so bad.  None where
determined a heart problem.  My heart was at a high rate at 6:30am in
the morning when i was sleeping.

Today i have about 1 slight beat i can feal an hour or 2.  I basically
am better.  One good thing is my cholestoral its down from 220 to 170
and tryglycorides from 270 to 220 from losing 25 lbs doing so much
hydro.  My blood sugar is 130 after eating.  My Blood pressure is
110/75 but my doc has now told me to stop the .1mg clonodine patch.

Can anyone tell why this happened to me?  This isnt in the normal for
withdrawl symptoms, heart racing, heart skipping, chest pain etc
Van - 22 Jan 2005 23:27 GMT
What does it mean to skip a heartbeat. sounds weird and hard to measure
to me. More like some kind of anxiety.

I see, EKG is irregular. So what. Don't triip on it.
Drs. will act like they know what is happening and what to do, but its
like bleeding for a fever or shcock therapy, they really don't know
sh.t, as the body is too complex to understand, and will be for quite a
while.

Yes. valium or xanex is always a good idea, and probably what you
should have done in the 1st place. But then you will be dependent on
them to remain calm, so its sort of half and half.
