I went to the grocery store tonight to buy some cold medicine and a lot of
the shelves in that area were bare. So when checking out, I mentioned that
a lot of people must have colds because a lot of stuff was sold out.

The cashier said there was a new law in Oregon about selling these and said
he needed to see my ID for the cold medicine I was buying....

I said you've got to be kidding!  He said only licensed some such places
could sell some stuff now and ID was required for other stuff.

Anyway I show him my ID and he just barely looks at it. He said this all
had to do with meth labs. Anyway I found a story about this (link below).

What I find as being silly is the asking for ID part. I'm sure the meth
people have ID's too. They aren't writing down names or what was purchased
(at grocery store). So how will asking for ID stop certain people from
buying this stuff?

It will not.  However the politician who wrote the law will get credit for
TRYING to do something about the meth problem. Obviously the next step is to
keep a log of names, addresses, license #s for pseudoephedrine purchasers
for the pharmacy police. I can still buy Robitussin with Codeine cough syrup
where I live without a Rx but a written log of my name and address has to be
kept by the pharmacy. If people don't complain pseudoephedrine will
eventually be removed from the market  It looks like in the War on Drugs
that Drugs are winning!

You are right, it does little to no good - actually does more harm than
good.
Cuz now Mexico has stepped up their efforts and is supplying the US with
meth.
And they are doing it even cheaper.

We in the city of Marion Iowa have stricter laws than most regarding
pseudoephedrine laws.  You may purchase one or two packages of drugs which
contain pseudoephedrine.  You cannot buy more than 2 in a 48 hour period.
You don't need to show photo id with current address if you buy one box...
that is left to the discretion of the seller.  If you buy 2 boxes you must
show a photo id and sign a log book (like the c-5 cough syrups).  (the log
part is Marion law... the rest is state law)

This type of plan was instituted in Oklahoma which  was #1 in the country in
violent crimes relating to methamphetamine.  Within one year of passage
Oklahoma dropped to #7.  Guess who became #1 .... Iowa.  The state
legislature is now considering tightening the laws to match Marion's.

The police periodically come and take the filled out pages.  They also have
called us  to see if we have sold any product to a specific person within
the last 48 hours.

The result...  We used to have some really scary guys who smelled like a
chemical factory in our store on a daily basis.  Since they now have to sign
the log book they have not come back.  They go to a neighboring city which
does not have the log book law in place (yet)  I really don't miss them
