Is it alright to use OTC Prilosec as a generic for a prescription for
Prilosec or omeprazole 20 mg?Is there any difference except that one
is a tablet and one is a capsule and the OTC brand costs about $.50
where the generic is about $1.40.Are they legally interchangable? Is
there any reason a physician would refuse the interchange?

Roger,

Since you posted this question, I am going out on a limb and assuming
that you are NOT a pharmacist, nor other health care professional.
Any pharmacist would know the answer to this question, and probably
inform you of the answer for a nominal fee.

Yes...20mg of omeprazole is the same whether  it is a capsule, tablet, name
brand etc.

I don't know what you mean by legally interchangeable?

Can they be substituted?  Yes.

They are NOT legally interchangeable, and NOT the same drug.  Yes,
that is NOT a typo.

OTC Prilosec is omeprazole magnesium, while RX omeprazole is
omeprazole sodium.  The rx version works on the first dose while the
OTC version take 4 days to work for most people.
