If you have a script for a controlled item that expires in 6 mnths can you
still take any leftover medication after 6 mnths or is that illegal since
the script has expired?

The expiration for a controlled substance is 6 months from the date the
prescription was originally written.   That means it cannot be legally
filled (or refilled) after that date.

As far as can you legally take the rxs which were filled within the 6 month
period after the filling date has expired.  If you have them you can legally
take them at any time.

This is a state by state issue, BTW, but this advice is for most states.
