I am a female 66 yrs. of age. I have been taking Zocor for over 12
years now. Recently I had cataract surgery on both eyes. The
Optimologist confirmed that Zocor can have an effect on increasing the
chances for cataracts. I asked him why I was not informed of this so
that I could make an informed decision about taking the drugs. He
stated the drug companies just didn't feel that this was important
enought to report as the condition is fixable. Now, my Medical Doctor
wants to raise Zocor from 40 mg per day to 80 mg. He agreed to the 40
mg per day as I was only taking the medication 2/3 of the time.
However, now he wants to add a strong dose of Niacin. I have also
been having some neurological damage and problems with blood pressure
and uneven sugar levels. It has been determined that I am not diabetic
per the long term test. No one in my family has ever had cataracts or
diabetes. Since the only unusal blood glucose test is the fasting
one, 126 to 155, (I have checked during the day and sugars are
normal), I seriously suspect that the Zocor which I take at night is
having an adverse effect on blood sugars also. Has anyone else had
experience with these problems? I do not want to take Zocor any more,
even though my high cholesterol is genetic.

Why Niacin? People have to take high levels for it to be effective. Flax
seed oil works better. (Can be taken in capsule format.)
Your diabetes being uncotrolled scares me. Have you been for
diabetes education training at a hospital or clinic?
Diabetes ups the BP and blood fats.
