Bananas have no potassium?

I'm a former athlete, used to play basketball, ate a lot of bananas.
They keep you feeling strong, healthy, invigorated, etc and we all
used to eat a lot of them before practices and games. Now, I was
always told that a big reason for this pick-me-up was because they
contain potassium. But recently, this triathlete I know was telling me
that that's a myth, that bananas actually contain absolutely no
potassium whatsoever by the time you buy them from a store. Only if
you pluck them straight off a tree do you get any potassium. So, is
she right? Is the notion of bananas containing potassium a myth?

That is sheer nonsense. Bananas have considerable potassium.

The USDA-HealtheTech SR Search (SR-18 Search)  program
indicates:

Raw bananas have 358 mg per 100 gr. Or a cup of mashed
bananas has 806 mg,
which is quite a lot.

While some of vitamin levels may change over the shelf life of the
fruit
and an element like potassium is going to remain. Who ever made this
comment
lacks a practical grasp of chemistry. Plus the USDA has
a nice download program that contains nutrient content information.
Understand, I not saying the values are exactly accurate but
they should give one a sense of what is in their diet.

Right.  Potassium is an element, and it doesn't evaporate.  There's no
way it can just go away.

Bananas are also high in phosphorus and, of course, sugar.
