Avoid caffeine.

Avoiding caffeine is sound advice. If you're prone to panic attacks it
is
the very first thing you should do because it is cost free. Anyway
coffee and caffeine bearing drinks and foods have enough downsides
that one is best off avoiding them for other reasons.

Some people get addicted to caffeine pills and end up consuming very
high levels of caffeine on a daily basis. Over a period of weeks this
will lead to acute panic attacks.

Of course, one should not overlook the fact that Panic & Anxiety
attacks is one of those diseases invented by the drug industry to sell
you more drugs. Many in the public have bought the promos of the drug
industry.
Anxiety is just a normal part of life. Therefore, the first approach
to treatment should always be behavioral.
Next, most people asking for help on newsgroups are self-diagnosed.
If you have been clinically diagnosed as being mentally ill, then it
is up to you to state so upfront.
You would be a fool to take the advice offered on this newsgroup over
that of your physician.

Take a look on WWW.PUBMED.GOV.
Look for the research on the use of high dose myo-inositol in
subjects having panic attacks, eating disorders, and OCD.
They were using 18 grams of inositol per day.
If you decide to use it, use the powder not the tablet
as the tablets contain too little and are too costly.
The powder is sweet and very sugar like. In fact,
an early name for it was "meat sugar."
It works by decreaseing serotonin tolerance or should
I say increasing serotonin sensitivity. It works at
the post-synapic gap secondary messanger level.
I use it. I take it as a truly heaping tablespoonful in
milk, juice, or water.

Will this work for you, I have no idea. I am not a Doc.
This not medical grade advice. Talk to your
Doctor so he can sneer at you and perhaps offer SSRI meds
instead. Further my comments are based on memory

I notice Sahelian doesn't mention calcium. Isn't that the first thing a
non-coffee-drinker should try?

BH: Although nutrition is important, I would look first to behavior.
Most likely, you are worrying about something which is getting your
adrenaline going. That causes you to hyperventilate which drives down
your blood CO2 which causes your blood to become too alkaline which
gives your mind something REAL to worry about, at which point a
vicious circle takes hold and you spiral into a full blown
panic/anxiety attack. Of course, you could have adrenal cancer or
other metabolic disturbances which are causing the production of
adrenaline, but that is less likely.
So, stopping the worrying would be the first choice. Not allowing your
mind to think of bad things is a great start. You CAN control your
thoughts. Try to think of something nice, like how much you enjoy
petting your cat.
Next would be to limit the hyperventilating. You can do that by
breathing through your nose, NOT your mouth. Next would be "square
breathing": breath in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, out for 4
seconds, hold for 4 seconds. The next thing would be to rebreath into a
bag, plastic or paper, take your pick, which will raise the level of
CO2 in your blood, averting the anxiety attack.
Hope this helps, BlackHawk

Nutritional imbalances can cause the blood
to become too alkaline as well.
One's nutritional status has a MAJOR effect
on behavior.

Is BlackHawk on the right track, Cheese Wheels? Do you hyperventilate?

If they're from excess stress hormone/cortisol, phosphatidylserine,
200-400 mg.

Nope! Vitamins are not effective against this type of problem
Stay away from using the herb kava kava as its use can be quite
toxic, if not fatal.

I would recommend deep breathing during an attack.

And, you are probably eating a horrible diet.

How do you know? Doesn't that depend on whether the problem is caused
by a vitamin deficiency?

That's silly.
Much more likely an endocrine disorder, HPA axis.

In men, dysfunction in the HPT axis can cause problems of
anxiety and panic attacks. By way of too little testosterone
and too much estrogen primarily estradiol.
I still stick with my original comment about myo-inositol which
compares favorably to Prozac in effectiveness. But I agree
the basis is less in too little inositol and more in the
aforementioned
hormonal imbalance. Go to the Doc he'll likely
give you a script for Prozac and sneer at the idea
of using inositol and tell the poor sap that his bottem end
testosterone value is in "range" and hence "normal.".
No matter that the value is the average for 100 year old men.

That is GOOD NEW FOR ME THEN!!!!!
I'm taking 18 grams, yes grams, of INOSITOL now every damn day for
anxiety and panic.
It seems to work.
THANKS!

Just remember that while inositol vastly safer and better than Prozac,
remember my comments on the hormones as well.

What's silly, Susan?
You snipped what I was responding to, which was the notion that vitamins
had nothing to do with anxiety.
Are you now saying that vitamin deficiencies have nothing to do with
endocrine disorders? If you ask me, that's silly.
I suspect you over-snipped, right?

Magnesium, but look for citrate rather than oxide.

It would have been nice to know the little detail about wanting it to
treat Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), as well as being a
psychiatric patient, up front.
The assumption is that you are only guessing that you are suffering
from Panic & Anxiety attacks.

No, I am pretty sure I am not guessing about anything I am suffering
from.

Cut out sugar and other refined carbs like white wheat products. Eat
real food. Supplement with two b vitamin complex stress formula per
day, at breakfast with food would be good. Take 1000 to 3000 mgs of
vitamin C, three to four times a day with food.
You will see a difference within days. It worked for me.

There's a slight discrepancy between your query and the Subject line.
Ordinarily, "natural" would suggest something other than vitamins and
supplements, such as camomile tea or relaxation exercises.
