Do readers of this group have any opinions about whether it's
healthful to take these?

Thanks.

I took all three for a long time.  I no longer take GLA but get a lot of
EPA/DHA.

May I ask why you no longer take GLA?

Life Extension Foundation Magazine and current research referenced was
enough to push me over the tipping point to not taking it for now (after
taking it for 3 years).  And, I had a desire to simplify my supplement
regiment since it is extensive.  These magazines are online or quickly
placed online after they come out.   I took a quick look at the online
material and found the follow.  Since I take the LEF brand fish oil with
sesame lignans, I decided I could for now do with out GLA.  There was
something else in the magazine but I cannot find it at the moment.

Here is the revelant paragraphs:

"GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) is a dietary fat that can increase levels of
DGLA and beneficial prostaglandin E1 in the body. When sesame lignans
are combined with fish oil, DGLA levels rise dramatically and the
anti-inflammatory benefit of the fish oil greatly improves."

"For consumers, this means that taking fish oil with sesame lignans may
provide comparable benefits to fish and borage oil (GLA) supplements.
Super Omega-3 contains a standardized sesame lignan extract to provide
users with these synergistic benefits shown in scientific studies. "

Yeah, because sesame inhibits the delta-5-desaturase which makes AA
from DGLA.  You can cook with sesame oil to get the same "benefits".
You may also consume trans fats to inhibit the delta-6-desaturase and
your Mead acid synthesis pathway would be completely f.cked.  You all
people have to learn the hard way, don't you.

"All you people".  Who is "all"?

I don't do trans-fats and avoid products that list them in the product
list even if they meet the legal definition of "0 grams trans fat per
serving".

All those who come here to get advice on which Omega-3 supplement is
the best to take ...  I would really like those who advise them to
state first how much they have been taking personally, for how long
and which real health problems they "cured" with it (not just blood
markers).

That's good, but it's pointless to inhibit the other steps in the
"essential fatty acid" synthesis pathway.  The body needs the end
products, be it Mead acid, AA or DHA, for specific signaling functions
in specific tissues to function optimally (in natural limited
amounts).

Note that the establishment prefers to feed you PUFA-rich vegetable
oils to charge your tissues with arachidonic acid (AA) and then sell
you different expensive drugs and nutritional supplements like fish
oils or GLA to inhibit its inflammatory discharge when you are under
stress or accumulate irritants like AGEs during aging in your body.

Even if you find cheap source of Omega-3 it's a bad approach in long
term - just look at how the evolution increases longevity - by
decreasing the membrane unsaturation and DHA seems to be the
particular culprit here.  If you want to live just the "intended"
human lifespan which is about 40 years, go ahead with high PUFA diet/
supplementation program.  But you won't die so easily like in the
caveman era and it will cost you a lot of money to keep the "chronic
diseases" in check.

I actually do not use vegetable oils in cooking and generally don't eat
processed foods that contain them.  I'm into meat(red, fish, fowl),
veggies, fruit, and nuts and cook with olive oil and don't have a
problem with butter.  I would use coconut oil as well but don't care
much for the taste.

You can search pubmed for real studies on real people with real health
problems and the measured effects from taking fish oil. There are many
thousands of studies on fish oil, epa and dha. Most of the "omega-3"
studies are on fish oil. Even though the flax industry would like you
to believe they are just as good.

What if fish oil leads to an inflammatory response for someone taking
it?

Real studies are for real suckers.

Only YOU can really make this determination.

Take some and see how it affects you, you'll need to pay close attention
to your own body for any clues, then you'll know.

Nothing beats personal experience, when it comes to determining what's
best for YOU.
