A friend of mine told me recently that there are various studies
showing the health benefits of dark chocolate.  Has anybody seen these
studies?

Go here:

A search on "dark chocolate" gets 57 hits.

And then go here:

for a less objective view.  :-)

Hi economist333,

You can read about dark chocolate on the web site of Dr. Steve
Warren:  http://mydrchocolate.soundconcepts.com/

He presents the research on the topic in a very accessible manner.  He
also explains how the "good stuff" is the dark chocolate that hasn't
had its nutritional value corrupted by the addition of tons of sugar
and fats or through a high-termperature cooking process that kills the
nutrients.

Bill makes a great point about being selective.  You don't want to buy
just any junk.

One of the leaders in this field is a line of dark chocolate products
called Xo?ai.  Their products are made from unprocessed cacao powder
and the exotic Amazonian A?ai berry, which is also very high in
antioxydants.

You can find out more and watch an informative video at

What constitutes "junk?"  This is really the key question, isn't it?
If the lipid peroxidation hypothesis (for lack of a better phrase) is
correct, it doesn't matter all that much, assuming the cocoa mass
content is the same or very close.

If you live in western US, you should be able to buy a 16.7 Ozs (1/2
kilogram) bar at Trader Joe's.
It is about 72% cocoa and has far more cocoa than most chocolates. It
costs $4 and is the
best deal I have found for years. I take it as medicine, of course.  :-)

There are numerous references to medicinal benefits at:

Have fun and plenty of Yum! Yum!
