how serious is the effect on glucose level when taking 1000-2000 mg Niacin daily?
just got my latest blood tests, fasting test done at 07:30am and Glucose was at 109
(Quest Lab upper limit 99)

I read these articles online

I take almost 3 grams a day and my fasting (at least 12 hours) glucose
lab results lately have been low 70s to low 80s.  I don't think I see a
down side to Niacin in the glucose arena.  On the other hand,
homocysteine gets knocked up 1-2 points.

Do you have any pre disposition to being diabetic (family history or
overweight etc.)?

What are the normal ratios of protein:fat:carb that you consume - ball
park estimate?  Do you do anything in particular to manage your blood
sugar levels?  Like Low glycemic foods or avoid sugar etc?  Lastly do
you exercise?

Type II runs in the family and I ought to drop another 30 lbs.  I would
say that most of my parents and siblings are close to 50 lbs overweight.

I track this with a small program on my phone/moble pc.  For the past
month it has been Carbs 32%, Protein 24%, Fat 45% or Carbs 137 G/day,
Protein 97 G/day and Fat 84 G/day.  I had set a goal of 25, 30, and 45
but I find I'm eating more carbs and less protein.  I'm trying to eat at
least 1.5 lbs of vegies and/or fruit a day which is about 3-4 times what
I used to eat.  I am in the process of dropping some lbs.

I get about 90 minutes of brisk walking in a week and limit processed
foods and starches.  I do not knowingly consume any transfats.

I thought I had a blood sugar problem a while ago but it turns out my
meter was off by about 25% (high) and I discovered that being sick
tended to raise my blood sugar as well.

I assume you had fasting blood glucose
levels below 100 mg/dL before the niacin.

If so, I have noticed the same problem as you:
I get an increase in fasting blood glucose when
I take high doses of niacin or its relations.
It appears to be a known side effect for some
of us, but not all.

I am dropping my niacin dose so as to get back
below 100 mg/dL  fasting blood glucose.  Another
possibility is going on a low carbohydrate diet to try and
lower your blood glucose despite the niacin.

But it may be a tossup as to whether the beneficial
change in cholesterol you get from the niacin is
worth the harmful change in blood glucose.
The tradeoff may depend on your genes:  if you have
a family history of heart disease vs. a family
history of diabetes.

You might want to buy a home glucose
test kit so that you can easily track it.
In the USA, the kits go on sale at pharmacies
for about $10 including some strips/lancets, and
you can buy extra strips inexpensively on eBay.
