I've frequently seen a claim (often in advetising materials for Nordic
Naturals) that if your fish oil capsules cause fish-flavored burps,
that means they are oxidized and potentially unhealthy. I have not been
able to find substantiation for this on the web, in medical journals,
or from the Nordic Naturals people themselves. Does anyone know of any
research that addresses the topic?

Thank you,

I don't, but the burps are just that, burps.  They should taste fishy,
just not like old, rotten fish.

I think I heard a pop book doc on TV yesterday say that if you keep the
caps in the freezer, you won't get the fishy burps.

Burping is just a normal side effect. It is not limited to fish oils.
My daughter inlaw took DHA supplement derived from ocean algae during
her pregnancy. Her major complaint was burping. The burping is lessened
if you take the supplement just before eating. It is true that if the
supplements were stored at high room temperature for a long time, the
oil may become oxidated and rancid. The supplements should be stored in
the refrigerator to prevent them from getting rancid. If the
supplements have become rancid they should be thrown away. Rancid
supplement burps will be more fishy. Burping eventually lessens as your
body gets used to the enzymes. In case of my daughter inlaw burping
disappeared after the first trimester. Either her body got used to the
enzymes or it may have something to do with the pregnancy itself, I
cannot say.

I don't know if it's true, but I've heard that your body needs fish oil
to properly digest fish oil. Something like that. And, so, the more fish
oil you eat, the better you become at digesting it. If true, that may
also suggest that the more burping one experiences, the more they really
should be taking it. I made that up.

When I first started taking fish oil, I had lots of annoying fish-burps
and it bothered me. That may have lasted a couple months, I don't
remember exactly. Now, it's been years and I NEVER have any burps. None.
Something pretty fundamental must have changed, because it's not just
less burps, it's never. And, I take 12 Kirkland fish oil concentrate
capsules per day. Six in the morning and six at night.

You might want to try pharmaceutical grade fish oil concentrate liquid:

http://www.iherb.com/store/ProductDetails.aspx?c=Herbs&pid=NFS-03574

It has 1500mg EPA per teaspoon (not tablespoon). The EPA and DHA are so
concentrated, there can't be much "fish" left. I would like to use it
(so I didn't have to swallow 12 caps), but it's still a little more
expensive per mg EPA than Kirkland. It's not a bad price (EPA/$) though
if you aren't a costco member.

In the pacific NW I have salmon at least twice a week and 5 capsules (1
gram/cap) of fish oil a day for the past 10 years.  In the beginning weeks
10 years ago I did have fish aroma burps, but it went away for good after
that.  I take fish oil capsules for its omega 3 benefits.  In fact I have
forgotten about it.
