Hi all,

I recently had bloodwork done, and had a few elevations that have me a
little worried.

ALT=54 U/L

Triglycerides=176 mg/dl

Total Cholesterol=256 mg/dl

All others, AST, blood sugar, Bilirubin, Alkaline Phosphatase, BUN,
Creatinine etc were normal.  Tests for Hepatitis B and C were negative.

I'm 6 foot tall, 29 years old, male, 240 lbs (not muscle, yes I know
way overweight). I pretty much get no exercise and eat too much fatty
food.  I drink maybe 7-12 beers per week.

Does this sound like a typical case that can be treated with diet,
weight loss, and exercise changes? What bothers me is the slightly
elevated ALT levels.  Will losing weight and exercising most likely
drop this?

I plan to visit with my MD in the next couple of weeks but wanted some
reassurance in the meantime.

Thanks!
John

Your lab results are indicative (if you were fasting for 12-14 hours) of
 possible insulin resistance and/or a high carb diet.  It would be
helpful to know what your HDL and fasting glucose are, too, but the 176
TGLs indicate that your liver is overproducing fatty acids in response
to too much carbohydrate intake.

Thanks Susan.  My HDL was 50 mg/DL, LDL 171 mg/DL, fasting glucose
(about 8 hrs) was 60 mg/DL.

Or indeed too much fat. The cure is surely to lower your energy intake
to match your activity.   jack

Hi John

I'm no scientist, but I do know that silymarin is a great substance
for the liver, and can normalize liver enzymes.   I've taken Thysilin
brand for years.   There are cheaper brands but I think it's the best.
Available at any health food store.  Cheapest place to buy it that
I know of is swansonhealth.com
