Hi,
I have become interested in taking vitamins on a daily basis. I have
started taking some supplements and seen some minor improvements in my
energy, well being and such. I would like to explore what are good
supplements I should take in addition to what I am taking now.
To give you my background, I am 40 years old with no particular issues.
I do have some joint pains in my knees and shoulders, stress and usual
growing old syndromes. I did drink alcohol from my college days, and
still overdo it once or twice on the weekends.
What I am taking now -
- A multi-vitamin
- Fish oil
- An antioxidant formula
I would like to add -
- A B-complex vitamin
- Alpha Lipoic Acid
- MSM or some joint health formula
- Anything that you can justify
Please suggest what you think I could add, why I should add them and
how it can benefit me. This is not a discussion about how much it
cost, what color my urine is or how much I am paying for it. I may be
paying for yellow urine, but if it helps me to belive that I am doing
somthing good for my body, it may have placebo effect to improve my
health.
Thanks in advence for your suggestions! Here is to your health and
mine for the new year of 2007..

Cut out the binge drinking, 2 drinks a day is a reasonable upper limit.

It's hard to tell the amount of vitamins with such a general category.

Good, but a doubly distilled can give you a higher dose of omega 3
fatty acids.

What's in it?

You may not be getting enough vitamin D, try for 1000 IU.
If your diet is low in calcium, try a supplement.
You may get better improvement by cutting out some foods such as those
high in trans fats or high in refined carbohydrates.

Your multivitamin should already be giving you enough B-complex (check
its label), and calcium (plus other minerals).
Fish oils are good, but eating them is better ;-) Try perhaps a blend
like UDO's for more balance: http://www.udoerasmus.com/FAQ.htm
Keep the antioxident formula, but remember it doesnt take the place of
fruits and vegetables.
ALA? Could be a good addition:

For a joint formula look for glucosamine with chondroitin (1000-1500mg)
they may also have MSM in them too.
Look at other herbal supplements for energy too, like ginsing:

and ginkgo biloba :

Also if you are lacking in energy check your sleep quality. Not
necessarily quantity, but quality. People tend to overlook this and
wonder why they are tired all the time. I've used at various times
melatonin, kava and or valerian, but recently have been using 5HTP
before bedtime and I get a deeper more restorative sleep than I have in
years by using it.

A plain B-50 will do. Taking too many throughout the day could result
in you overdosing on B-6.
> - Alpha Lipoic Acid
Unless you are diabetic, Alpha Lipoic Acid is a total waste. It's
half-life is only 20 minutes which can be compared to 12 hours for
Alpha forms of vitamin E. Lipoic acid is just plain too expensive.
You would have to spend a considerable amount of money to get an
effective form of Lipoic acid.
