I am taking a capsule that has 600 mg and 30 mg of CoQ10. It suggests
taking two of these daily but I am only taking one. I do need to bring
my cholesterol down. I am wondering if taking this lower dose has any
effectiveness.

One Red Yeast Rice pill is the approximate equivalent of a 10 mg dosage
of Lovastatin (Mevacor®, a drug produced by Merck & Co., Inc).
Lovastatin is simply the synthetic form of the active ingredient in Red
Yeast Rice extract. All statins have the nasty side effect of
weakening your muscles and causing aches and pains. As old people are
the ones who take this stuff, they usually confuse this side effect as
just a part of old age. The CoQ10 is there to counter this side
effect. If you were to complain about muscle weakness to your
physician, he would say that you should be taken off the drug.
This red yeast rice extract is just as effective at damaging your liver
as Mevacor, or any other form of statin, is. Hence, you should get
your liver periodically tested.
To recap, you are taking about the equivalent of a minimum dosage of a
statin drug that a physician would prescribe in order to lower
cholesterol. The only way to tell how effective one capsule a day of
red yeast exact is for you is to get the standard blood test for
cholesterol that breaks it down by HDL and LDL levels after fasting for
12 hours. A test that gives only the TC count does not help very much.
The dietary solution is to add more fiber to your diet in the form of
whole-grains. And, especially old fashion oatmeal.

John,
I thought the problem with statins is that they use the same pathway as
CoQ10 and this tends to cause problems. I don't have my references,
but for a good while now, various doctors have been trying to get the
drugs companies to recommend that people taking statins should
supplement with CoQ10.
Several years ago, I read that the FDA wanted Red Yeast Rice pulled
from store shelves - I guess they either changed their minds or just
aren't out enforcing the rules. I'll look for the references is anyone
wants.
Just my 2 cents.

Correct because Red Yeast Rice extract is essentially the same thing as
Lovastatin (Mevacor®, a drug produced by Merck & Co., Inc). Red Yeast
Rice is the natural form while Lovastatin is the synthetic form. The
ruling was later reverse upon appeal.

hello John

never, it isn`t, never.
Red Yeast Rice (formerly CHOLESTIN) is fermented by normally glutinous
Rice,heated, milled, packed in Capsules.
In red Yeast Rice is only 15% Lovastatin (Monacolin K) not more. thats
it.
< Red Yeast Rice is the natural form while Lovastatin is the synthetic
form.
it isn`t, because in Red Yeast Rice Is: 65 % Mevinolinic acid, 15%
Monacolin K, Dehydromonacolin, Dihydromonacolin , severals acids more
i.e.
but, i wrote and mean formerly CHOLESTIN or MONACHOL in Europe, and not
the fakes there are a mix from normally Red Rice (food-colour) with
synthetic Lovastatin as sold in USA.
greetings
Andrea

Yeah, ... Right, Sure: Opinions are a dime a dozen.
You are a new caller. It was close enough for the FDA to have
originally banned it. Your comments have little, if anything, to do
with the prior questions raised.
Cheers ...
