Has anyone proven the new cholesterol reducing margarines like logicol
to effectively reduce your cholesterol level?
montygram - 23 Mar 2006 05:23 GMT
You need to be brought up to date: only oxidized cholesterol is
dangerous.  Lowering your cholesterol raises your risk of cancer and
other "diseases."  Thus, what you really want to do is to make sure you
don't eat oxidized cholesterol and also that you don't eat foods that
act as oxidizing agents once inside your body.  The worst thing for
most people is called lipid peroxidation (fats going rancid), and if
you avoid any major source of unsaturated fatty acids, you prevent this
to a very large degree.  You can also eat berries, dark chocolate, and
other common foods that are high in antioxidants (but do not eat a lot
of beans, whole grains, and leafy greens, which have anti-nutritive
qualities).  You can search this group for montygram and read some of
my older posts, which go into more detail

Very low cholesterol is rather a sign that cells use cholesterol for
new cell synthesis faster than liver can provide it, not being a
reason for the high cell division speed.
Low cholesterol feed from liver would rather slow down cell division
since all new cells do need cholesterol for stiffening the cell walls,
like carbon function in iron to make steel, not soft carbon free iron
or too rich in carbon.

I think you're confusing cell membranes (also called "plasma membranes")
with cell walls.  Plant cells have walls (outside their plasma
membranes), which contain cellulose, which makes them rigid.

Animal cells don't have walls, just cell membranes.  (And various
membranes inside, too.)

Cholesterol is a building block of steroids, which are hormones.  I
think it is also converted to vitamin D by the action of sunlight on the
skin.

I don't think it has anything to do with cell membranes or cell
division, though -- but I'm willing to learn!

(This doesn't mean I agree with montygram, though.)

Oops.  I spoke too soon.

I just noticed cholesterol is needed for bile acid synthesis, too.

Don't know (yet) about cell membranes, but learning quick.  :-)

I don't know about logicol, but studies on some others (Benecol IIRC)
found that they do improve cholesterol levels. But they are a very
expensive means of doing so.

In think that the best results can be achieved by combining several ways to
reduce cholesterol. In the Portfolio diet, developed byt the Toronto
University, they have combined almonds, soy products, soluble fiber, and
cholesterol reducing plant stanol margarines. In studies this Portfolio diet
has been equal with cholesterol lowering statin drugs in reducing
cholesterol.

My mouth is watering already!

What ever happened to good ol' grass-fed butter?  High in omega 3,
loaded with the type of cholesterol that is beneficial to the digestive
system (the non-oxidized type) and even has the Wulzen and X factors
not found in grain fed dairy or any margarine.

Sure it's hard to find, but it's worth the extra pain if you eat a lot
of butter.

So is mine. :-p It is just lack of imagination and skill if you are not able
to make delicious meals including those ingredients.

Why bother? Real food is easier to prepare and much much healthier.
Good healthy animal fats makes food soooooo tasty and healthy. Pork fat
rules. And it is low carb. And will control cholesterol levels. Real
food = real health.

Using no butter nor margarine at all at the bread combined with
cholesterol lowering LEAR rape seed oil has lowered my cholesterol
from 5.1 to 4.1 :-) (So no I should not go lower)

I have made an almost similar choice. :-) For many years I have not used
butter nor margarine but extra virgin oils (extra virgin olive oil and LEAR
cold pressed rape seed oil). My total cholesterol is also 4 and I am not
aiming lower.

But most likely, drinking lot of squalene in form of olive oil might
perhaps not be a very good idea to combine with such remedies. Even
more if you eat statins. Squalene is a key intermediate in forming
cholesterol, and thus bypassing the step blocked by statins.
