Atkins/GI/GL question...

Hi folks,

Can I ask the experts hereabouts if I'm right about something?

Here goes:

Am I correct in thinking that Atkins is on the extreme side because he
didn't work in terms of actual 'glycaemic load' as opposed to 'glycaemic
index': he rules out or restricts some things -- on the basis of their GI --  
that maybe should be allowed because in practice *they actually have a low
GL*?

If this is right, then surely someone who doesn't really get on with the
usual Atkins regime would be able to add more fruits and vegetables to it --  
if they knew which types!?!

Do let me know if this is right!

I think Atkins felt that carbs were harmful by themselves, withour regard to
the effect of GI or GL.

Fruits and vegetables are part of the Atkins regime. You can go and buy his
books or go to the Atkins web stie for more details. There may even be
newsgroups for the Atkings diet for all I know (or care).

COMMENT:

Glycemic load is amount of carbohydrate per serving multiplied by the
glycemic index of that carbohydrate.  It's a better index for what a
serving of something will do to your blood sugar if you eat it alone.
For example, carrots have a high glycermic index but a low glycemic
load because they don't have that much carbohydrate per serving.

Atkins DID pay attention to total grams of carbohydrate per serving,
which means his recommendations tend to track glycemic *load* better
than index. Simply because load varies much more than index from food
to food. But Atkins didn't particularly track either one.

Thanks for this, Steve. I should explain that I'm asking because a friend of
mine who has quite serious problems with her weight has just asked me if
it's possible for her to get more fruit & veg into her diet without
altogether abandoning the Atkins regime that has been getting results for

could look up a GL table somewhere so that she could try gradually adding

giving me your reaction to that idea: is she going to be able to increase
her fruit/veg intake and still have a carb-controlled regimen? I'm asking
you this, Steve, because I've read a lot of your posts in the last few
months, and I consider you a bit more objective and well-informed than the
average web-site (or n/g poster...).
