Is there any such thing as a natural nasal decongestant?

I always have a problem with a stuffy nose during the winter months,
even when I don't have a cold.  It is particularly bothersome when I
wake up in the middle of the night with a dry mouth because I had been
breathing through it due to a stopped up nose.

I sometimes use Afrin spray once a day at bedtime and that seems to do
the trick, but I don't like taking it all the time because I seem to
build up a tolerance to it where it takes more to keep me clear for less
time.  Also, it seems to dry out my nasal passages.

Are there any other suggestions?

Thanks, Gary

Gary -- I recommend rinsing the nasal passages with saline solution to keep them
clear, the way the ancient yogis used to.  It's kind of a 'fad' right now, so
you can get a neti pot almost anywhere.  I started doing this on the advice of
my allergist, and I can't recommend it highly enough.  Link below -- M9

I do it with a small shot glass in through one open nasal passage and spit
out the mouth.

Recommend it highly also.

Get your tear ducts flushed that drain into your sinuses.

I believe that it is called blowing your nose!

Just thought that you might want to know. :)

I said that I had a SUFFY nose, NOT a RUNNY nose.  No amount of blowing
my nose is going to do anything.

How does that saying go, now?  I am an adult, and I know how to take
care of a F'n'cold.  What does that make you?

Ha, ... Hah, Ha!

Just my opinion.  But, I am *right* as usual!

If you had taken the time to read my original post, you would have seen
that I said that I DO NOT have a COLD!  NEITHER do I have a RUNNY NOSE.
I have a condition that I have had for a good part of my life that
simply gets worse in the winter time.  If you can't post an intelligent
response, why post anything at all?

Blowing is bad advice. The pressure merely pushes back mucus and debris into
nasal passages, thus aggravating the situation. Nasal lavage is one option.
The other is hot food. Another is breathing in steam from a steamer (be real
careful). Put some vicks in the water but again be careful.

Considering this is a nutrition group....it goes in the mouth like other
food.

I know this works because I suffered from the same problem:

Drink at least a quart-and-a-half of plain water every day.
Drink 12-14 ozs before bed. No problem.

The most misguided effort of sentience is the attempt
to...insist on fellow-happiness at any price. To refrain
from harming others is one thing; to design and order
happiness for others and to enforce delivery invites an
equal-and-opposite reaction.
