I was wondering how much fat a low fat diet really contains. Are
people taking into account the amount of fat they consume from things
like bread/grain/milk when they go on a low fat diet?

I know you have to look at the amount of cooking fat (vegetable
oil/butter/lard) but do people realize that grains contain an adaquate
amount of fat as well?

The correct definition of a Low-Fat diet is 30%  or less fat, which is
still quite a bit of fat.

A Very Low-Fat diet contains 20% or less fat. And, an Extremely Low-Fat
diet contains 10% or less fat.

These definitions are not my invention, but rather what I found to be
true after a little bit of research.

The amount of fat in the diet that can be safely consumed is always
relative to your activity levels.  People with a very physically
demanding lifestyle can safely eat a 40% diet, like the original
Mediterranean diet for example.

Since nutrition lables contain the amount of fat, and food composition books
(with fat/carbs/vitamin/mineral content) are readily available, peoplewith
an interest DO know the composition of the food they eat.

also be mindfully of the type of fat. This is another importance
consideration when planning your diet.

Someday, the current strange obsession with cutting fats from foods will be
seen as the insanity that it is.  The body thrives on a 60% fat diet.  It is
the carbs, especially sugars and starches, that need to be cut.

The only thing insane here is the of people on smn advocating insane
diets.

Just my opinion, but I am right as usual. :)
