Hello,

My doctor recently recommended that I take a fish oil tablet every day to
help lower my triglycerides and raise my HDL.  He didn't give me any other
information beyond that.  I am also on Tricor which has helped lower my
triglycerides significantly.

When I went to buy some fish oil tablets, I saw that there are some that
have just omega-3 fatty acids, and some also have omega-6. Then there are
others labeled Salmon Oil.

I am a little confused as to which to get.

Thanks,
Ed B.

Most common fish oils have about 30% by weight in two omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and
DHA combined. There is usually another 5 per cent or so in other omega-3s. On top of
that there is up to 15 per cent in various omega-6 fatty acids. Other more saturated
fatty acids make up the rest.

Salmon oil is a good choice, especially if it's from wild fish. Fish oil could be
any number of different things, but I wouldn't worry too much about the details.
Salmon oil, or fish oil, take your pick.

Check out Udo's Website. I take his EFA oil twice a day.

It are the omega-3s that are important.
I join a link to a DrWeil's page, you'll find there links to pages where
the topic is discussed:

Here is the American Heart Association's recommendation:
http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4632

Patients who need to lower triglycerides  2 to 4 grams of EPA+DHA per
day provided as capsules under a physician’s care.

Patients taking more than 3 grams of omega-3 fatty acids from
supplements should do so only under a physician’s care.  High intakes
could cause excessive bleeding in some people.
