NELLORE: Doctors of Bollineni Eye Hospital and Research Centre have operated on
a 12-year-old boy to restore complete vision. According to the chief
consultant, Sai Murali, the boy, Jagadish, of Nayadupet in Nellore district had
approached him with complaint of defective vision in both eyes. He was
diagnosed as having bilateral development cataract, which affects babies who
were malnourished during pregnancy and if left unnoticed may lead to
irreversible blindness, known as `lazy eye.

The disease occurs in 2 of 1,000 children, Dr. Sai Murali said. To combat the
problem, the hospital is conducting regular school screening programmes.
