Promotion of fracture healing by vitamin E in rats.

Turk C, Halici M, Guney A, Akgun H, Sahin V, Muhtaroglu S.

Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Medical Faculty, Erciyes
University, Kayseri, Turkey.

We investigated the effects of the antioxidant alphae-tocopherol on early- and
late-phase fracture healing in a rat model. Sixty male Sprague-Dawley rats were
randomized into two groups. The right tibia of each rat was fractured manually
under anaesthesia, and fracture sites fixed with intramedullary Kirschner
wires. The alpha-tocopherol group received 20 mg/kg alpha-tocopherol
intraperitoneally; the control group received intraperitoneal saline
injections. Ten rats from each group were sacrificed on day 15, day 45 and day
60. In the alpha-tocopherol group, malondialdehyde concentrations, a measure of
lipid peroxidation associated with oxygen free radicals, were significantly
decreased on day 15 and day 45 compared with the control group, but had
regained the 15-day value on day 60. On histopathological and radiological
assessment, fracture healing on day 60 was significantly more advanced in the
alpha-tocopherol group. We conclude that alpha-tocopherol has a positive effect
on both early and late-phase fracture healing, and may be beneficial in
clinical fracture

I will remember this if  I ever have to treat a rat with a  broken leg.

one of our friends age 63 on another NG... was riding his
motorcycle in arizona doing about 60 mph when a deer jumped
onto his chest and took him off the bike, he hit a rock wall
and broke 127 bones in his body.... his face was mush, broken
bones pushed back behind his ears. both feet shattered, jaw is
now a piece of titanium... both legs, both hips, colar bone,
ribs one arm... his a.s was broken... one leg had to be
amputated below the knee, he had massive systemic
infections... and his heart stopped a few times and he had to
have stints and two pace makers... the bruising to his heart
was so bad that one doctor said it was amost totally dead
tissue and he would need a heart transplant...

he was wearing the best in protective gear too..full face
helmut, racing boots, full padded leathers, and gloves etc.

4 of his close friends on bikes and one sherrif were right
behind him when it happened...he got the best of the best
evacuation and medical care.

a few hundred people on the NG.. sport bikers mostly...prayed
for him.. some sent him kind thoughts of warm pussy..whatever
they could come up with,..bob, thats our friend who was mushed
into hamburger finally came to... and said he could feel the
prayers... Bob is a salty old bastard so that was
surprising....so we know  that helped  (pets in hosptials help
a lot too but we couldnt get one into the ICU)

and he was nuts for awhile planning to escape from the
hospital while still in traction... his head was swollen up
like a beach ball on steroids... he looked real bad for a long
time

but he made it. the accident was 4 months ago, he got out of
the hospital last month.. he is at home doing rehab...he has
two bikes, one an 186 mph Suzuki crotch rocket (now a nessy
looking ball of aluminum and plastic, covered with deer hair
and guts)...the other a haul a.s Truimph triple that he is
polishing up for his triumpant return.

I will tell him to take vitamins...

we have  congratulated him on quiting smoking... we all lied
to him in unison about that...we told him he quite years
ago... the man can't remember a damn thing about any of
that...so now he is a non smoker..
