I recently bought a soft drink at Whole Foods that is made of pure
cane sugar. Does that mean it is better for one than regular soda or
is it just a marketing ploy?

Sugar is, by far, the most common pure organic chemical made.
Chemically speaking there is no difference between sugar derived from
beets, or cane.

to answer, this is a marketing ploy. would have bought if the label
said "pure white sugar"?

cane sugar is sucrose which is composed of two simple
sugars, glucose and fructose. It means the soda contains
somewhat less fructose than a soda based on high fructose
corn syrup. It only matters if you are a cane grower
or a cane processor. In short, largely a marketing
ploy. It is still a product that should be avoided for
regular use.
