I am 62 and was identified as having type 2 diabates . My doctor has put
me on Metformin 500 mg twicw daily . I have lost 12lbs in the last 2
years and now my weight remain steady at 160 lbs , I am 5ft 9 in tall.
Since I am a vegeterian but do take eggs my doctor advised me to
take one egg a day and a slice of cheese to give me some protein but
advised me not to take apples , bananas and other fruits .
I am also hypertensive and take Atenalol 50mg , norvasc 5mg and
enalapril 5mg . I do feel exhausted at times , my friends say it is
because I am not taking enough protein .I am from India and our staple
diet is whole grain wheat flour and rice .
Kindly advise .
Regards ,

An important consideration is the current status of various tests that
track the status of your diabetes. One called a1c is usualy done every 3
months or so and gets an average of your blood glucose level for that
time. Others measure your blood lipids, such as the ldl, hdl
triglycerides. Another is your blood pressure. Perhaps most important on
a day to day basis are the results of the blood glucose tests you take at
home each day. All of these taken togather are a profile of your diabetes
status. Do you know what your's are? I ask because the results are key to
suggesting what diet modifications make sense. Once one has diabetes
eating a vegetarian diet makes it very hard to control those things that
tend to cause one's diabetes status to worsen. You might want to
consider also reading this news group in addition to this one:
alt.support.diabetes
Without knowing your current diabetes status as above, in general
decreasing carbohydrates, increasing protein and unsaturated sources of
fats is the approach. The amounts of these depends on your status. The
weight loss is good. Another key is to increase your physical activity in
some structured way,ie. x amount of time for y times a week. Diet,
weight, and exercise have the greatest impact, along with medications, on
one's diabetes status.

In my remarks about using a post meal glucose goal to gauge how many
carbohydrates to consume I used a 160 at two hours. Instead I meant to
say a 160 at one hour and 140 at two hours. Sorry for not catching it
when posting before.

All I can say is you are yet another example of why a strict
vegeterian or vegan diet is so unhealthy. I STRONGLY recommend you
check out the work of the greatest nutritional researcher of all time
Weston A. Price to learn the truth about real health and real food.
Get his book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration and check out web
site for the weston price foundation. You wont regret it.
