my sprained ankle

Hi I have a question about my sprained ankle.  I sprained my ankle
pretty badly around 2 years ago.  I was X-rayed and told to stay on
crutches for awhile, then advised informally I could start walking on
it, but didn't really have a follow up or physical therapy.  Now, I
like to exercise alot, so I started using it and it gradually got alot
better.  But then, it got worse, especially when I started doing a lot
of Dance Dance Revolution, this exercise video game where you step on
four arrows in turn, and my ankle lands at weird angles.  I did a bit
of physical therapy and then had to stop, and then I think I resprained
it, it got ALOT worse.  So I went off it for a month, felt back to
normal, and then I started some real PT.  Then my ankle started to hurt
again (I can only get because of the PT) and I got scared and stopped
for awhile, now it feels somewhat better....

The point is I'm way confused, is this normal?  I used to exercise even
though it would hurt a bit because it only REALLY hurt later on.  Can I
do my dancing game at low level?  I'm getting scared that it wont ever
get better and I feel stupid about hurting myself this way.
Btw I got an X-ray when I (think) I resprained it, so it's not
fractured.
Thanks for the help!

I think you need to go and talk to your PT or doctor. Pain when you exercise
is not normal.

One thing I learned in medical school is that if it hurts when a patient
lifts her hand real high about her head, you tell her not to lift her hand
above her head.

If it hurts when you do exercise, it is time to stop the exercise and talk
with the docs and PTs. When it really hurts when you exercise (or after) it
means that you are injuring something.
