I had a cut on my finger and got stitches.  The wound was not really
big and I it's healed up and I want to take the stitches out.  Is it
okay to do myself, or should this only be done by a doctor?  they are
not dissolvable stitches.

As long as the wound is closed but not too long because it will harden
around the thread. Just take a pair of *clean* scissors and snip each
stitch in the middle (but not on the knots), then using forceps (or
clean needle nose pliers) pull out each one slowly at a 45* angle (aka
between straight up and to the side). Then using a damp cloth with
hydrogen peroxide, dab the spot to clean. If you notice any infection
see you doctor immeadietly.

This is a good way to not have to go to the doctors and possibly spend
more money.

Cheers!

I don't like the sound of this.  Such work is best done by a
person with experience in it, and knowledge of sterile work
basics.  In my view, do-it-yourself, is probably a bad idea.

A couple of things come to mind when I read this.  This advice
neglects a few details, like cleaning the site before you clip and
remove sutures.  Further, this is a two-hands operation, and
given sutures in a finger, one hand is not available.  *At least,*
find a knowledgeable friend to do this work.  And, do it late in
the healing process after the closure has developed some
strength.  Best of all, take it to an expert.  Economy on this
detail may prove to be no economy at all.

1. yes u can, use sterile teknik, fine one point scissors,as it is well
healed, small. and band aid after.
2.if u donot remove in 8 - 14 days, the  silk/cotton sutures get stuck
to the skin layers.
3.make sure the wound all layers are closed well. otherwise after
remove sutures the wound can gape all length or some part.
4make sure there is no pus/infection along.
5.there can be swollen ridge, even keloids. take care.
6.if u have insurance, those people may not accept self removal.
7. take note of the other 2 writers.
