my wife was closing a gate that she didn't know was being held open
with a bungee cord, it snapped off and wacked her very hard right above
her wrist on her ulna. She says she feels the pain all the way up to
her thumb like some kind of nerve damage. There is very little swelling
but she says she's having a hard time picking things up. She says the
pain was very acute when it first happened a couple of hours ago but is
less painful now. She doesn't believe anything is broken and can move
all of her fingers, it's just her thumb that she's worried about. Is it
possible that she has nerve damage or is it just something that needs
some rest?

The radial nerve ennervates the back of the thumb and part of the dorsum of
the hand. It's fairly superficial and vulnerable, but it lies over the
radius on the dorsum of the wrist and it's not located anywhere near the
ulna.
