I noticed that wearing ear plugs appears to give me a headache. Any
ideas why?

This may sound a tad patronizing, but how tight are you fitting your
ear plugs? Headaches can be caused by devices which are too tight or
are uncomforatble in anyway. Maybe you should have this checked out?

Dunno but the ones I used to wear just plain bothered me after awhile. They
were the foam kind that you roll into a little stick, put in the ear, and then
let expand.
I switched to a set of these and never looked back:

I wear them for five hours at a time with no discomfort. Probably more - but
the jobs I do with them don't last any longer.
The mike system has an advantage when you're operating equipment: if
something's coming loose you can hear it rattling.

You could be pushing cerumen into the ear canal causing an obstruction.
