OK, so a group of youths beat the living hell out of my face on
friday. My zygomatic arch is broken, as you can see in the x ray
below (best quality I can manage, sorry). The NHS treated me as if I
was nothing and didn't tell me how to look after it or what would
happen. Please tell me what the future holds - how long to heal, if
you think I will need surgery, if I will look different without it,
etc. Thanks a lot.

I have more x rays from other angles if necessary

You need to go back to the accident and emergency department and ask to see
a doctor, taking with you your x-rays and a list of questions you want
answered and a determination that you will get the answers. By the way, how
did you manage to get hold of your x-rays?

I'm going to see a GP in a few days anyway, who will hopefully be able
to answer my questions. I'm just sat at home in pain with nothing to
do is why I thought I'd ask if anyone could help me.
I asked for my xrays and they just let me keep them :s

I believe the best projection for a fractured zygomatic arch is the
submental vertex projection (I'm digging back to my ancient history for
this, so I'm not sure:)

Back in the dark days of my dental residency, the oral surgical
residents told me (apparently not in jest) that they sometimes placed a
teaspoon intraorally and popped it out. I AM NOT SUGGESTING YOU DO THIS
YOURSELF!!)
I don't think the bulk of these required surgery, as long as it isn't
separated. The other thing you must be sure of is that it is ONLY the
zygomatic arch, and does not involve the zygomaxillary complex. If you
have any numbness in front of your face, or if you have any point
tenderness under your eye, or if you've suffered double vision, if you
bled from the nostril on that side, this could indicate a more serious
fracture that could require surgery.
You may wish to post over at sci.med.dentistry and put ATT: Dr. King in
the header. He's an oral surgeon who appears frequently and this would
be right up his alley.
Good luck,
Steve
