Hello,
My Dad's hip replacement seems to be failing after about 25 years. He's in
pain, but we're not sure if this is an emergency or not. What kind of damage
can one do to one's self trying to amble about on a failing artificial hip?
Any info or links would be much appreciated!!
Thanks!

We can't examine your father or get a proper history.
Why not call your father's doctor first thing in the morning and talk to
him/her?
I bet you can get a referral to an orthopedic doc, perhaps even the doc who
did the surgery 25 years ago, right away.

It depends on why it's giving out, but yes, they certainly do break down,
especially hips done 25 years ago. Technology is better today, technique is
better, rehab is better.
Re-doing a hip is kind of a big deal. It's a difficult operation and not one
that should be in the hands of a typical orthopedist who only does 40-50
hips per year. Revisional joint surgery should be done by someone with a lot
of experience in doing it. Seek out such an orthopedist - they're often
found in tertiary care centers and university programs.

Thanks guys. He plans to call the hospital tomorrow, but I just wanted to
get as much info as possible on the potential dangers of limping around with
a failing hip.
Thanks again.
