popping in right ear

Hi everyone,

Something that has been bothering me now for a while is popping in my
right ear, and I'm concerned about what it could it be caused by and if
it may indicate damage to the ear drum.     I'm hoping to eventually go
in for a doctor's appointment to have it diagnosed whenever I have more
money (at the moment I'm unemployed and spending time looking for
another job)  But at the moment, if a knowledgable person here has a
good idea as to the cause and a solution, I'd really appreciate that.

Let me describe the problem.   I noticed that whenever I yawn, my right
ear starts to pop, but my left ear is unaffected.  Also, whenever I
hear a high pitched sound, like a dog barking for instance, my right
ear starts popping and feels irritated, but my left ear is unaffected.
What could be causing this?  If it is ear drum damage, is this
irreversible to treat by a doctor, or can this kind of ailment be
treated?   I had thought it was maybe a build up of ear wax,   so I
purchased an over the counter ear wax remover from the local grocery
and tried it for about a week, but I didn't notice any improvement.
Any ideas to what is causing this or solutions would be greatly
appreciated.

thanks

For a diagnosis a doctor would need to look down your ear canal. In my
experience, wax removal drops don't remove wax or cause it to run out, they
just soften the wax. If you have wax it doesn't surprise me that you didn't
notice any improvement after a week; a doctor might recommend different ear
drops or ear irrigation.

I'm afraid there's not much you can do without an evaluation by an ENT. You
may have some type of congestion within the middle ear (behind the ear drum)
or affecting the eustachian tube (a passage from behind the ear drum to the
pharynx).

If you have sinus problems, allergies, or a cold, you could try treating
that, but you are probably going to have to see an ENT.
