> Does anyone know how long someone can survive a hanging?
A long time.
I read book about it once in my youth. It takes a lot of skill to hang
a person properly. The hanging ropes actually have to be aged properly
too.
When done improperly, a person can struggle for quite a long time. When
done properly, the person's neck is broken on impact resulting in a
relatively quick death.
Of course, executioners have also managed to botch a number of
executions in the gas chamber and electric chair.
A simple Google search should come up with many hits on this topic.

Actually, it is now felt that breaking of the neck merely results in a
victim who is quadriplegic (and cannot "kick"). Death by hanging
results from both asphyxia (choking) and cutting off of blood supply
to the brain.
It is likely that, if the carotid arteries are totally cut off, the
victim loses consciousness rapidly; but it does take many minutes for
the heart to stop.

sounds like a painful way to go. If the condamned could chose, much
better to ask to be shot by a firing squad than hung.

Only if the victim is shot in the head. A chest shot (to the heart)
can take a minute or so before the victim will lose consciousness, and
if the heart is missed, it can take quite a while to die of bleeding
into the chest (which is painful).
