I've noticed that extremely overweight people stink up the restroom in
a particularly foul way - has this particularly pungent edge that about
bowls you over.

What causes this?

American fast food.

My first guess would be too much food and not enough bile.   I base this on my
own experience since getting my gall bladder removed.   There are jokes about
people who think their bowel movements don't stink, but I've got to say that on
a scale of 1-10, before the operation I was a 1 or 2 and after I'm a fairly
consistently 9 or 10.   It's *really* gross.   OTOH, flatulence is greatly
reduced.  OTOOH, what gas happens, the smell is constantly very bad.

Could be... Bile salts enable you to digest and absorb fats.  Without
enough of them, I expect that most will go through to the colon, where
they get fermented by the resident bacteria.  Fermenting fats
generally produce butyric acid (a/k/a butanoic acid), which is really
nasty smelling stuff, and the basis for a lot of high-school pranks.

We had a high school science teacher who kept order in the class partially via
the punishment of uncorking the bottle of butyric acid when we got too out of
hand.

It worked pretty well...

Ahhh Pete you just brought back a fond high school memory to me.

My Sophmore bio teacher one day in front of the class let rip with an
"expansion of gas through his anal orfice" (his exact words) that had
the entire class rolling.

When ever I go back to my high school days in my minds eye I grin about
that little episode.

A good source for answering this question is Bobbi Sanchez who posts
to SSFA using the name Lady Veteran.   She is a morbidly obese woman
who posts frequently on the fat-acceptance newsgroup and has often
mentioned her flatulence.

Address this question to Bobbi Sanchez.
