Hi,

I have developed a hemorrhoid. I have not had one before and I am using
over the counter topical hydro cortisone cream. It's been 10 days and
it's not gone away, although seem to have "dispersed" a bit, from a hard
pea sized lump (thrombosis?) to a softer more spread out area bulge.

Can anyone tell me if I can keep using the cream? At what point would I
experience side effects, e.g., skin thinning, and would this be permanent.

thanks for any help, this whole thing is very distressing.

Your body won't absorb enough steroid from topical application to a
hemorrhoid to manifest systemic effects. OTOH, you are probably well past
the point of diminishing returns from the use of that stuff in this setting.
You might consider just using some sort of astringent like Preparation H or
Anusol at this point.

You don't mention your age, but if it doesn't resolve completely soon, it
might be worthwhile to have a doctor get a look at the thing to make sure it
is indeed just a thrombosed external or prolapsed internal hemorrhoid.
