Someone made a deep cut in my neck Sunday (2-26-06) morning. The blade
almost cut a carotid artery. It didn't, though, and I'm alive. I'll
probably heal okay. And since, a pic is worth almost a thousand words,
http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/nehmos/album?.dir=/adc8 (I usually shave,
but I haven't felt up to anything since the wound.)
After it happened, I used compression to stem the bleeding. I called
911 and then went outside to wait for the ambulance. The cops arrived
first and wanted to see the wound. They didn't realize how bad it was
and made me to briefly expose it for them. They regretted the order I
believe (an artery was cut, but not the large carotid). I told them I
fell on a piece of sheet metal.
I spent several hours in the emergency room (KU Med Center in Kansas
City, Kansas). A car wreck came in right after I did, so I got bumped
me out of position for the stitching. I didn't have to go to the
operating room, but they teetered on the decision. At one point I
passed out. From my perspective, it seemed the people giving me care
did a decent job.
Aside from how it happened, and I'm not prepared to talk about that at
this point, I'm wondering if I should get some meaning from event. You
always realize death is possible, but when it comes close, you realize
with added meaning. But I don't know. I kind of feel peculiar about
this. It's hard to describe.

Wow--it could have been much worse.
Nice closure. In time, no one will even notice the scar. Looks like
you're keeping it nice and clean, which is good.
As far as meaning, I suppose that depends on the circumstances of the
knifing. Otherwise, it's sometimes good to get couseling after a
traumatic event like this.
Good luck,
Steve

Thanks doc, now that I look at it, it does look like a good closure
job. I'm not overly concerned about a scar, but it's nice to know it'll
be small. You never know what kind of opinions others might form when
they see a scar.
My thoughts on the subject could go in any number of directions.
Certainly I'll think about the incident itself [1], but that's only
part of it. I mean, I really might have died this time. If one of the
carotids had been cut, I very well might not have lasted till the
ambulance came. I don't really believe in luck, but how come I'm alive?
You see what I mean? I now can live some more, and easily it could have
went the other way.
[1] I can get away with providing some more info. The person who did it
was on Klonopin, a benzodiazepine. It makes them crazy. I didn't do
anything to provoke - not that I can remember.

He is, as always, looking for sympathy.

Ahhhhhh...gotta love technology. Used to be you only had to worry about your
spouse running off telling lies about you and rehashing your fights to his
friends or the neighbors. Now, usenet is the neighbors.

If we're lucky the Internet will hit back.

If you're near Jimmy's Jigger, you're near Truman Medical's psych ward.
One of you should visit.
