I had lithotripsy done for kidney stone  removal and got a bill from
urologist for $2200 and from a anesthesiologist for $800 and thought
that was it and normal .  It was done at outpatient facility and the
time on the machine was less than one hour and then a couple hours in a
room for recovery.  Today the hospital has sent a bill for over $21,000
for a 23 hour outpatient treatment!!!! Can this be right? My God we
have very high deductible insurance and may have to pay a lot of this.
Has Anyone else see a bill like this?  I know child birth with couple
days stay in hospital is much less than this. We are in the  South
Carolina.

Costs vary from region to region. That hospital cost seems high by
comparison to a 23 hour hospital stay for a surgical procedure around here,
but the variable may well be in the cost of the lithotripter machine. Many
hospitals don't have them on-site and they are leased on a periodic basis,
which would indeed likely increase the cost to the patient.

Certainly, you should make sure you have an itemized bill and visit the
business office of the hospital in question. You need to make sure that they
didn't make an error, and you would likely be able to negotiate both amount
and payment schedule.

Hospital costs always tend to be shocking compared to professional fees.

Thanks, we will do that. The machine is owned by the hospital and used
a lot so costs should have come down. Cannot feel this is correct but
may be. The hospital is on our preferred provider network for our
insurance so they should have some say in it too.
