Let me start off with a few things to better describe the situation. I
was diagnosed with Mono about two weeks ago (been dealing with it for
about a month and a half), and I have IBS.

For medications I take Methylin E.R. 20MG twice a day for ADD, Zebeta
5MG tablets once daily for high blood pressure and rapid heart rate and
Atrovent inhaler for asthma as needed. For over-the-counter medications
I take Chlortrimiton (sp?) for seasonal/occaisonal allergies. I'm also,
if it matters, 50 lbs overweight (5'10").

Last Thursday (February 2nd) I went to work with mild pain on my left
side. I worked through the day wild mild discomfort. I work sitting in a
chair in a call center for about eight hours a day. I got home that day
feeling pretty good, tired and weak (from the Mono) but was a hurting a
bit on my lower left side.

Later that evening the pain progressed to extreme pain levels and I was
rushed to the ER. They gave me pain medication and did a CT scan along
with blood work and everything checked out normal. They sent me home
with instructions to rest and drink plenty of fluids. The pain has been
continuing and fluctuating but thankfully has gotten to the levels it
was at on Thursday. According to the ER they said it was likely an
inflamed, but not enlarged, spleen.

Monday, February 6th, I went to my doctor who was a bit puzzled by the
symptoms I was describing. I described as I did to the EMTs as a pain
that began on my lower left side that migrated up to form essentially an
upside down L on my left side with the lower portion of this L over
where my spleen is. As I type this the pain is moderately-high but
tolerable. The ER gave me a prescription for Vicodin which has gone
unfilled. I don't believe in taking pain medication.

What I'm trying to find out is what this could be, pain wise, and what I
could do for it. It could all be related to the mononucleosis I was
diagnosed with.

I hate to write and I hate not to write, in case it is helpful.    You
mention IBS, could not the testing link anything to the IBS.   Sometimes
symptoms from IBS (could it  be crohns/colitis?)
are not easily diagnosed.    I DO NOT KNOW if the present condition is
linked to IBS.   There is a support group on this usenet called
"alt.support.crohns-colitis" that may help.
If that should turn out to be the problem, I have a strange theory on the
cause.    Anyhing to do with the spleen is really in a doctor's realm for
treatment.   But then again, if the pain is from IBS, my theory could help.
I will leave it to you if you care to go to the crohns-colitis group.    If
you are determined to have the pain from IBS. you could also email me if you
care to hear my theory on the cause of crohns and colitis which is quite
unusual.   and not accepted by many on the group.   That is why I would
rather relate it by E-mail.

It is impossible to provide you with personalized competent medical advice
via USENET.
A splenic rupture would likely have caused more severe symptoms over the
past week, but you may want to go back to your doctor and see if a repeat CT
scan is indicated.  As you probably already know, patients recuperating from
Mono typically have enlarged spleens and are vulnerable to splenic rupture
espeically from trauma.

There may also be enough splenic enlargement that stretching of the splenic
capsule can occur, which can in turn cause left upper quadrant pain without
any frank rupture. It is very true, however, that this relatively enlarged
and tense spleen is more vulnerable to rupture from trauma. It might be wise
to stay off the dirt bike for a few weeks.

I have some updates that might help if anyone has any ideas as to what
could be going on.

Naturally the doctor has instructed that I rest and due to the
unpredictable nature of the pain I'm on a short-term medical leave from
work. I'm also on Oxycontin (sp) for pain medication to allow my
inflamed (as believed) spleen to heal.

When I try to do anything that requires me to bend over, even when
getting up slowly I get a stabbing type pain under the lower left two
ribs on my left side. My doctor has been doing blood work and at the
last visit (last Thursday) to check if the Mononucleosis is still active.

I've had two CT scans, both with the IV contrast and one with the barium
. They both came back normal and didn't notice any spleen enlargement or
anything else.

The ER back on last Thursday (02/02/05) ran a urinalysis to check for
blood in urine which came back normal and ran the CT scan with kidney
stones in mind because of where the pain was. It was, and still is, on
my left flank, under my lower rib cage and goes around to my lower back
right above my kidney.

Right now the pain is the most persistent on my lower back above my
kidney. I have not noticed any blood in my urine, visually, or any
indications of it being in my stool.

Any help or input would greatly be appreciated.

I am having the same pain where the spleen is located. The only
difference is that I haven't had mono. The pain is at the edge of the
left rib cage. I went to see my gyn., and he said it may be the spleen
and I had to see a gastrologist. The gastrologist keeps giving me
different meds that haven't worked for IBS and muscle relaxers (he
thought I pulled a muscle). Has your doctor found the cause of the
pain, yet?
