The recent findings of iron supplementation in children with malaria
leads to increased .. death ..

This was proposed ten years ago as in theory being .. possible .. and
most likely correct.

Ten years later the hypothesis is proven correct.

http://allafrica.com/stories/200601160149.html

The WHO is being asked to investigate their policy of iron
supplementation in those with malaria.

Tuberculosis is ANOTHER disease which is iron .. dependent.

Approximately one-third of the world's population is already infected.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Low iron diet has been recommended and shown to be efficacious in those
with tuberculosis.

Now does one sit idly by while another ten years goes by .. with
millions dying DUE TO ..the indiscriminate supplementation of iron ..
or does one .. take .. umbridge ..

Dietary Iron Associated With Pulmonary Tuberculosis In Rural Africans

A DGReview of :"Association of Pulmonary Tuberculosis with Increased
Dietary
Iron"
Journal of Infectious Diseases

10/17/2001
By James Adams

Increased dietary iron is associated with a 3.5 fold increase in the
estimated
odds of developing active tuberculosis in rural Africans.

Researchers from multiple institutions, including the University of
Zimbabwe
School of Medicine in Harare, Zimbabwe, and the National Institute of
Child
Health and Human Development (NICHD) in Bethesda, Maryland, United
States,
investigated the possibility that increased dietary iron is a risk
factor for
tuberculosis.

"Exposure to high levels of dietary iron in the form of traditional
beer is
associated with increased iron stores in rural Africans," according to
the
investigators.

Ninety-eight pulmonary tuberculosis patients and 98 controls from rural

Zimbabwe were included in the study. Their dietary iron history and
human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status were evaluated.

Results showed that HIV seropositivity was associated with a 17.3-fold
increase
in the estimated odds of developing active tuberculosis. Also, HIV
seropositivity in patients treated for tuberculosis was associated with
a
3.8-fold increase in the estimated hazard ratio of death.

Increased dietary iron was associated with a 3.5-fold increase in the
odds of
developing active tuberculosis and a 1.3-fold increase in the estimated
hazard
ratio of death.

The study was financially supported by the Office of Minority Health to
the
Cell Biology and Metabolism Branch of the NICHD, the Cell Biology and
Metabolism Branch of the NICHD and the J.F. Kapnek Charitable Trust in
Harare,
Zimbabwe.

IRON DEPOSITION IN THE JOINTS OF CHILDREN WITH JUVENILE RHEUMATOID
ARTHRITIS

Author(s):
SHYPAILO ROMAN J

Interpretive Summary:
We wanted to develop an accurate and noninvasive way of
determining the amount of iron deposited in the joints of
patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Children with JRA
often develop excess iron in their joints, so doctors need a
way of monitoring the iron level, particularly when prescribing
iron supplements for the common problem of anemia. However, the
only method currently available is to take a biopsy. We adapted
a machine called a gamma counter to measure the iron in eight
patients' joints after giving them an iron isotope by vein.
Then we compared the results with the total amount of iron in
their bodies, measured by a whole-body counter. We found that
we had developed an accurate new way of measuring iron in these
patients' joints. We also found that six of the eight subjects
had excess uptake of the iron isotope in their joints. That
provided a signal that a preponderance of JRA patients are
prone to have this problem, and clinicians should take special
care to monitor them for it. Moreover, this is the first time a
noninvasive way of performing this measurement has been
available.

OK - this has been going on for ages.
I have to ask.

Tom - why iron ?

There's endless other medical/dietry bandwagons you could have jumped on.
Why specifically iron ?
What's the special significance - ten years - this has to be personal ?

Yes, why iron? I've often wondered also. Or, for that
matter, why any monomania? Why do some single
out coconut as the solution to every nutritional problem?
And so on.

If you don't post because you want people to understand, then why post at
all?
Unless there after all are at least some purpose for all your contributions,
your answer is meaningless.
I don't doubt that iron can be the answer to some disturbances, but reading
your letters it seems that iron is the cause or cure to whatever healthcare
problem one can imagine - and that is deeply irratonal.Asking if you have
yourself had any personal experience involving treatment or lack of same
with reference to iron is an obvious way to get beyond irritation and start
communication. For some reason you choose to candidate to be plonked
instead. Why is that?

Thesaurus - that is spelling and grammar, isn't it?...I am not a native
English speaker, so don't bother looking up my statements to improve that.
If instead you are referring to the internal logic in the sentence, I think
I miss the deeper understanding of you statement.

Well, his and my letters were the first for a while to actually trying not
to offend you.
So - again - if dialogue is what you want, then confrontation is probably
not the way to choose from a start.
