Costs for shoulder surgery?

Just wondering if anyone would happen to know of a website that
discusses aproximate costs for various shoulder surgery's?  I'm a
Canadian and on a very long waiting list to repair some (aparently)
minor damage on my right shoulder.  I don't remember exactly what's
"chipped off" (it happened during a seizure), but the ortho surgeon
didn't freak out when he saw the x-rays and I was informed that it was
an easy fix.  I laugh at the term "minor", as the bugger
quazi-dislocates at least once or twice per week; but I can still
function - and workout (for the most part and with exceptions) at the
gym.  Also, I'm 32 if that affects costs.

Where are you?  And what's the wait time?

I'm in Ottawa.. And my family Dr. has attempted to refer me to 2
different Ortho surgeons; I haven't heard anything from them, yet -
that's 6 and 12 months now.  I had managed to speak with one surgeon 2+
Years ago (right after I had a benign tumor extracted from my head);
he's the guy who first reviewed the x-rays, but he wouldn't consider
scheduling me for surgery until it was confirmed that a 2nd brain
operation wouldn't be needed (it's since been confirmed that the
epilepsy surgery was a success).

So the way I see this project is like this:  Either I have a family Dr.
who doesn't know the "right" surgeon to send me to?  Or, I should
investigate private alternatives to get this shoulder repaired in a
reasonable time frame.  I'd rather avoid paying for the treatment,
however if I had to pick which one to pay for, the shoulder would be
it. ;-)

Well, you might want to ask him or the receptionist to re-fax the request
or call to followup on the requests. Make sure the requests were faxed, but
from my experience they can get buried in piles, unless they go to the
correct person (booking of that department) in which case you should have
heard a date long before now. You could also ask if a request could be
faxed to the one you've already seen before.
Toronto might be an option if you're willing to travel.
My GP sent me to a retired surgeon for an opinion (what a stupid idea). He
told me to continue steroid injections, after I just finished telling him
they weren't giving me sustained relief. So I continued the steroid
injections for 4 years, and this past September I told the referring doctor
(for the steroid injections) that this isn't working and she said she
hadn't realized. *duh*. I'd only been telling her for 3 years. She said the
wait would be 2 years+ in one big city nearby and suggested a different
city where she knew of a very good  surgeon. That was Sept. Within 3 weeks
of that, i had a consult date (March) which is 7 months - it's too far for
you and I don't want you bumping me down the surgery list :)
She's an MD, FRCPC in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
I checked Ottawa for same and there's 33, but only 2 accepting patients.
The one I have can only see me 2/year. She's too busy and people come to
her from 100's of miles away, so I don't know what the wait would be if you
tried to go that route to someon in your area.

Choose advanced search and all active doctors in the specific specialty for
Ottawa and you'll see the same list I was just looking at.
If you click on a name, it gives their history and fax numbers.
However, apparently this information is not updated daily, so those that
say "accepting new patients" may not be (or the reverse).  And the wait
might be just as long to get in to the MD in Phy Med & Rehab, so work it
both ways.
I suppose you could also check orthopedic doctors there for Ottawa and
Toronto, but then it's not someone who is known. A friend of mine's ankle
got messed up one who was old and about to retire, but it was an emergency
so she went to the closest hospital and got what she got. So it might be
important to get an informed referral.

There are a few people, from Toronto, who read this newsgroup. Perhaps
they'll chime in, so watch for other replies.
I check this newsgroup frequently, so hope to see your update.
Good luck

So, are you asking about costs of shoulder surgery in Canada? USA? Somewhere
else?

I know of no website for that information on US costs of any kind of
surgery. I have patients occasionally ask about such costs, and I refer them
to my clinic's business office, who tells them my fee for the CPT code I
specify -- then they are in turn sent to the hospital's business office, who
tells them the average cost of hospitalization for the last 4 or 5 of those
operations.

So, you might try that...find out exactly what shoulder operation you're
talking about, then start calling around.
