Hi,
My mom (who lives in Europe) has had dysphagia issues for a long time
(roughly 20 years). It always seems to come and go, lately every 1.5
years or so. When it occurs, she's not able to eat or drink almost
anything for 2-3 days (implying hospital visits, IV in some cases),
then it gradually gets better and within a month or so it goes back to
the normal level. She has never fully recovered since this first
happened, so this normal level is not exactly normal, she always
experiences some degree of difficulty swallowing, but, outside of these
crysis periods, it's at somewhat tollerable levels. In the past it got
better for a number of years, but now it seems like it is getting worse
again. She took various tests and has been seen by several physicians
(gastrointestinal, neurology, phychiatry, etc.) over time, but nobody
seems to be able to figure what's causing this, as she has no other
obvious symptoms to point to related conditions (e.g. multiple
sclerosis or such). The general conclusion seems to be that it's
probaby related to some neurological disorder, but the diagnosys stops
there.
Did anybody hear of any similar manifestation of this or does anybody
have any idea of what can be done/investigated ?
Thanks.

The basic diagnostic information would be barium swallow xray, EGD, and
esophageal manometry. Without knowing the results of those, there's just not
enough information for anyone here to even guess.
