Flu shot side effect

They say severe allegic response is very rare, but apparently it is
real.  I got what appears to be anaphylactic shock, for the second
time.  Last time I got, I wasn't' sure if it wasn't just an anxiety
response.  Today, I got the same thing.  After about 2 minutes, my
heart rate shot up all of sudden and I felt short of breath and dizzy.
All passed away in 30 sec though.  Then another flash after 20 min for
about 15 sec.

My doc says I should be able to continue with flu shots if I insist
since the reaction was minor.  (He actually recommended against it
after the first episode, but I insisted it).  It's a bit scary though,
when your heart races and you are short of breath for no reason.
Should I stop getting flu shots under any circumstance other than being
in a high risk group?  (I'm not in a high risk goup, though I have my
reasons for the shot).  For now, my plan is to continue to receive it
unless there is a reason to believe that the reaction can get worse in
the future.

are  you seriously asking if you should receive a flu vaccine again,
having experienced what you characterize as an "anapylactic" reaction?
what reason could be compelling enough for you to subject yourself to
this?

Well, I"m virtually guaranteed to catch flu this year again, since I'm
rolling with lots of different guys (in a grappling sport!).  And I have
post-infection respiratory hyper-reactivity that can last up to 2 months.
Not to mention the sickness interfering during the tournament season.  Hence
pondering the risk/benefit of flu shots.

I hope some of the doctors will step in here, but there is an
alternative flu vaccine, given intranasally rather than by injection.
I wonder if it is prepared differently, and thus might have a
different profile of causing allergic reaction. (Some people react to
the flu vaccine because of the way it is made.)

Please check this out before acting on it, but it at least may offer
you an alternative to look into.

Bob, very good point.  I did check the side effects of nasal spray
vaccine and found that it had about 7 anaphylactic reaction reported to
CDC out of about a million.  But I may not react to it though, so
perhaps I should try that instead. Thanks for bringing it up.

This doesn't sound like anaphylaxis to me.
Google anaphylaxis, then vasovagal syncope, and see which sounds more
like your reaction.
