The more you try to game the system by going to the thinner doses, the
more chance you have of failing. So it depends on your method of
feedback. If you have a good method to know you're infected, then you
can try the lower amount and double it (in duration or dose) if it
doesn't work.
And stop trying to be like those New Yorkers who want the A salad with
the B dressing but without the C and D and can you get F ala carte.
You probably aren't going to tip large enough for that.

I think I found a partial answer: Most web sites in the UK/Austr/NZ on
trich says to take 800 mg total per 24 hrs for 5 days. For single-dose
treatment, "CONCLUSION: A single 1.5-g dose of metronidazole has
efficacy equivalent to a single 2-g dose for the treatment of T
vaginalis vaginitis." Obstet Gynecol. 1997 May;89(5 Pt 1):699-703.
