Patient-Therapist Boundary Issues By Glen O. Gabbard, M.D. Psychiatric Times October 2005 Vol. XXII Issue 12 "Professional boundaries are components that constitute the therapeutic frame. They can be considered to represent an "edge" or limit of the appropriate behavior by the psychoanalytic psychotherapist in the clinical setting (Gutheil and Gabbard, 1993). The fundamental notion inherent in the concept of professional boundaries is that attention to the basic aspects of the professional nature of the therapeutic relationship will serve to create an atmosphere of safety and predictability that facilitates the patient's ability to use the treatment. Therapists are professionals being paid for a service, and therefore they must recognize that a power differential always exists in the psychoanalytic psychotherapy of a patient. And that is a crime. My expectation as a resident of New York State is based on what the law says, clearly articulated. A patient has the right to expect the truth, and accurate medical records. I see no subcategories or excpetion in the law, other than those exercised with the intent of the "pursuit of justice," as the NY law states.
