I have an appointment with two doctors for vasectomy and need to cancel
one. Both are urologists and have done many of them. One injects you
with valium, one has you take a valium pill 20 minutes befor the
procedure. To be truthful, I am a a little afraid of needles.
I also have some errection probhlems. The doctor that gives the shot
seems to think it is probably in my head since I am young. I guess the
guy that gives the pills takes it more seriously.
The guy givng the shot is a little nicer to talk to. He says he and his
patients usually cut up and have a good time while he is giving the
vasectomy. The other doctor is more serious.
The pil guy made the comment that the valium pill was an emetic and was
given in his words, "to keep you from puking on my shoes".

You mean anti-emetic. Valium is used preoperatively to treat anxiety, but
it is also an anti-emetic (reduces nausea). It's also sometimes used to
stop seizures or to help with substance abuse withdrawal.

You obviously like the funny doc better. You're a paying customer and he'll
want to make you happy. This may just be about convenience for him. He may
simply not keep oral Valium on hand. Tell him you have a needle phobia and
you want a prescription for an oral preoperative dose of Valium, which
you'll pick up at a pharmacy. You'll probably need an IV line for the
surgery anyway, but while you're under the influence of sufficient Valium,
you will not be afraid of needles.
Good luck.

Use of an anti-anxiety medication depends on your level of anxiety. Oral
valium might be fine, I happen to think that sublingual administration of IV
Versed is better (it tastes bitter - we give it with a couple of Tic-Tacs).
Use of IV Versed or Valium can be a little tricky in a doctor's office -
intravenous conscious sedation should be done with appropriate monitoring
(ekg/oximetry) and an IV line. Technically, IVCS without that stuff and a
nurse to monitor would be a deviation from the generally-acknowledged
standards of care.
Oral administration of Versed or Valium, an IV line wouldn't be necessary
for a vasectomy.
Vasectomy is pretty routine for your average urologist. Pick the one you
like the most.

The IV doc said it would only be him and the patient during the
vasectomy. He said I would receive a shot in the vain of valium before.
He said he cuts up with patients while he is doing the procedure and
has a good time.
I thught it seemed strange to get a shot like that in the office.
(Althought his office is attached to the hospital.)
The other guy gives a pill 20 minutes before. He was more "matter of
fact" Said some people do have pain afterward but 90% dont. (The first
guy made it sound like no one did).
Personality wise the first guy is who I liked but shot thing scared me
a little. When the pill guy said the valium was to keep me from "puking
on his shoes" that scared me a lot! (Why would I puke on his shoes
exactly?)

Maybe you should ask yourself if any woman is worth all this trouble!
