Yesterday I noticed a hard lump under my skin.  It location is on top of my
right hand wrist.  If I were wearing a wristwatch there, it would be next to
the number 9.  It feels like a 3/8" ball bearing except it seems fixed to the
hard surface below.  It is painful when I palpate it.  I do not see any
discoloration or puncture through the skin.  My skin moves freely over it.

Any ideas what it might be?  Could it be a spider bite?  What should a doctor
do?

Whew, thanks.  Must be that.

It is almost gone now too - a little residual pain when I press on it.  My
guess is that in the future heat would be better than cold - heat would make
the fluid thinner and more likely to roll back into the joint area where it is
supposed to be.

It's quite common.

My grandmother used to tell a story about a doc who treated a large ganglion
cyst by having her place her arm on his desk and, without warning, thumping
on her wrist with a medical dictionary.  (Don't do that.  ;)
