Swelling due to cast

I have a full arm cast for a Scaphoid fracture that I have been
wearing for almost a week now.  Yesterday I noticed some slight
swelling in my index and middle fingers.  I've done some
research on the web and some sites say to seek med attention if
there is swelling and others say if there is excessive swelling.
I called the hospital that put me in the cast and they told me
they can't give medical advice over the phone.  I don't want the
cast loosened unless it's absolutely necessary.  I go back in 12
days to have it cut off and checked.  I know that the Scaphoid
has a delicate blood supply though.  Is this something I need
checked out immediately, or should I just wait and see if it
worsens?

              Thanks,
              Duane

Duane,

I think you should start flexing those finger
muscles.  A physical therapist once told me
that each forelimb/hindlimb muscle is like a
water pump.  Flexing the muscle pumps the
water out of the nearest joint.  If you don't do
this when a joint swells, you may lose the use
of the joint.
Quack, quack
