What are the relative disadvantages of insterting an esophageal stent into
a Barrett's cancer patient?  Of course it opens up the blockage, but does
it create any lesser problems, related to the stent alone?

Erosion, bleeding, perforation, pain. Stents would be used in this
circumstance as palliation, to decrease the patient's discomfort due to
inability swallow in their few remaining weeks or months.
