I have been on several meds for quite some time, but have also been
experiencing some cardiac symptoms -- both high blood pressure, and
rapid pulse, some "skipping" of heart beats -- which may or may not be
related to the meds. As an experiment, my doctor and I have agreed
that I will be getting off the meds, one at a time. (First, off one
med, see what effect that has. Then, if no effect, back on the med,
then off the next med, etc.)
The doctor has indicated that, if getting off the meds should result in
decreased blood pressure, or decreased pulse (or both), the result
should start to be evident after about a week or so. I'm posting here
to get a second opinion. Assuming one these meds is, in fact, causing
increased BP or pulse rate to begin with, will these side effects
subside after just one week off the medicine?
The meds are: Desipramine, Remeron, Provigil
I also take a low dose of Zyprexa and a moderate dose of Depakote, but
the doctor seems pretty sure these should not have any cardiac related
effects. Is he correct here?
Thanks in advance for all informed replies.

desipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant. ALL tricyclic ADs have
anti-cholinergic side effects, although desipramine has the weakest
anti-cholinergic side effects of all the tricyclics. But it still has
some anti-cholinergic effect. Its known as a more stimulating type
antidepressant due to the fact it works more on norephinephrine than
serotonin.
Anti-cholinergic side effects are cardio-toxic. All anti-cholinergic
type medications are considered "risky" for anyone with cardiovascular
diseases. And it would be normal to have an elevated resting pulse on
any tricyclic AD.
So it is entirely possible to have an elevated resting heart beat per
minute (resting pulse) from desipramine's anti-cholinergic side
effects.
The modern class antidepressants (Prozac and beyond) have basically
zero anti-cholinergic side effects.

LOL Your doctor is a liar. Zyprexa is being implicated in causing
diabetes to develop or exacerbating diabetes that pre-existed. It is
also famous for causing obesity. There are a lot...I mean a bunch of
class action lawsuits going on right now against zyprexa and its
diabetes inducing side effect. Why just today on a TV commercial there
was a law firm advertising to call a number to get in on a zyprexa
class action law suit settlement.
Zyprexa shouldnt cause an elevated pulse, but if your doctor said there
are no cardio side effects he is full of sh.t. As Zyprexa is so
connected with diabetes and causing obesity it is unreal.
Depakote doesnt have any direct cardio side effects, however it is
famous for making people fatter than hogs. Depakote is a sedating med
that should calm you down more than speed you up.
Remeron is another psych med thats famous for making you fat as a hog.
Sounds like you have a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, as depakote and
zyprexa are FDA approved for bipolar disorder, not for major
depression. Being a serious mental patient may mean that your doctor(s)
may not be totally truthful with you about certain drug side effects.

Zyprexa packed the weight on me until I stopped it. I'm no expert, but
ask the doctor if you can stop all the meds and take Abilify instead.

Go ask a doctor who is not connected to the psychiatrist who rxed you
zyprexa. Then ask to be tested for diabetes (fasting AM blood sugar).
If your blood sugar isnt elevated Id be surprised as hell.
If its elevated, if they tell you that you have diabetes or
pre-diabetes...dont tell any doctor what you are going to do. Instead,
contact an attorney who is in on one of these zyprexa class action
lawsuits IMMEDIATELY. You might be entitled to a cash settlement.
